South Korea to test blockchain deposit tokens for government spending in Q
South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance will begin testing blockchain-based deposit tokens for government spending in the fourth quarter as part of a broader push to modernize how public funds are managed.

The ministry said the pilot to spend Treasury funds as digital currency was approved under a 2026 regulatory sandbox program, local media reported.

The approval allows business promotion expenses, currently processed with government purchasing cards, to be paid using tokenized deposits.

The change alters a long-standing system governed by the Treasury Funds Management Act, which required card-based payments. In the sandbox environment, agencies will be able to operate outside those rules on a limited basis to test new methods.

Officials expect the change to improve oversight. Token-based payments can be programmed with predefined conditions, including limits on when funds can be used and which industries can accept them. This could reduce the need for manual audits, especially when spending occurs outside standard hours.

The system also removes intermediaries such as card networks, which the ministry says could lower transaction fees for small businesses that receive government payments.

This marks the second use of deposit tokens in Treasury operations, following an earlier pilot tied to electric vehicle-charging infrastructure subsidies.

The trial will take place in Sejong City after a selection process for participating firms, the report states. The ministry plans to expand the program if it shows stronger control over spending and measurable cost savings.

The Ethereum DEX aggregator market landscape has shifted over the past year, moving away from the near-dominance of a single protocol toward a more distributed competitive field.

Kyber currently leads with approximately 31% market share, followed by CowSwap at 22%, while 1inch has seen its share decline from roughly 30% to 15% over the same period. This diversification stands in contrast to broader trends in crypto, where many sectors have seen consolidation.

The all-time view shows 1inch commanding the majority of aggregator volume through 2021-2022, a period that coincided with aggressive liquidity mining campaigns across DeFi. The subsequent erosion of its share as incentives wound down raises a structural question of how much of any aggregator's volume reflects genuine user preference versus incentive-driven activity.

It is worth noting that this data captures direct-to-aggregator volume only. If a user routes through aggregator A and it internally routes to aggregator B, only aggregator A receives credit. Flash loan trades are also filtered out. This methodology means the figures likely understate the reach of protocols that function as backends for other aggregators.

Whether the current distribution reflects lasting structural change or another rotation driven by incentive cycles will become clearer as token programs mature.

For now, the data suggests the aggregator space on Ethereum is more competitive than it has been in years.

Charles Hoskinson used a lengthy video address this week to deliver what he described as a long overdue reckoning for Bitcoin maximalists, centred on a quantum computing threat he says is no longer theoretical and a proposed fix he says does not actually work.

As of March 1, 2026, over 34% of all Bitcoin has had its public key exposed on-chain, either through address reuse or legacy pay-to-public-key-hash formats. That represents approximately 8 million Bitcoin that could be stolen by an attacker with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. Based on current research timelines, Hoskinson places that threat arriving in the 2030s.

“Not hypothetically one magical day in the future when unicorns fart rainbows,” he said. “In the 2030s. Right in front of your face.”

The Proposal That Does Not Solve the Problem

A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal currently circulating, BIP-361, attempts to address the vulnerability by freezing quantum-vulnerable funds and forcing a migration to post-quantum addresses. Hoskinson spent considerable time dissecting why he believes it fails on its own terms.

The proposal claims to be a soft fork. Hoskinson says it is not. It would require a hard fork, something Bitcoin has never done and, by the religion of its maximalist community, never will.

More critically, the proposed zero-knowledge proof recovery system only works for wallets built on the BIP-39 seed phrase standard, which was not introduced until 2013. Approximately 1.7 million Bitcoin, including an estimated 1.1 million belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto, exist in legacy wallet formats that predate this standard. There is no zero-knowledge proof that can recover those coins.

Currently, European public companies holding Bitcoin are relatively small compared to their US counterparts. Holdings are spread across multiple firms, and many are facing unrealized losses due to recent market fluctuations.

In contrast, US-based companies continue to dominate the space, with large-scale Bitcoin acquisitions happening regularly. This highlights a significant gap in scale and risk appetite between the two regions.

Overall, Europe’s Bitcoin treasury strategy is evolving as a localized version tailored to its regulatory and financial environment. While growth is slower, it reflects a more cautious and structured approach to Bitcoin adoption.
