The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) described the case as “a violent robbery spree targeting cryptocurrency owners” in a press release on May 11.

Prosecutors alleged the men traveled from Tennessee to California to target victims in San Francisco, San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Los Angeles. They allegedly posed as pizza, package, and coffee delivery workers to persuade victims to open their doors before forcing entry into the residences. Authorities said the attackers carried firearms and used duct tape and zip ties to restrain victims during the robberies. The DOJ stated:

“In one of the incidents perpetrated by the conspiracy, the victim was forced at gunpoint to sign into his cryptocurrency accounts so that a co-conspirator could transfer approximately $6.5 million from his cryptocurrency accounts to a wallet controlled by the co-conspirators.”

The indictment alleged the group carried out coordinated home-invasion robberies and attempted robberies across multiple California cities. Prosecutors said victims were assaulted, restrained, and threatened inside their homes during the attacks.

Saylor signals BTC buy as retail holders get push on STRC dividend vote
Strategy chairman Michael Saylor on Sunday signaled the Bitcoin treasury company would be buying more of the cryptocurrency in the week ahead while also encouraging retailer shareholders to vote on a proxy measure enabling semi-monthly dividend payouts on the company’s STRC perpetual preferred stock.

“Big Dot Energy” was Saylor's tweet late Sunday morning to accompany a bubble chart tracking Strategy’s BTC purchases over the past nearly six years. That chart, from Iceland-registered StrategyTracker.com, has been consistently posted by Saylor in the days ahead of a corporate purchase.

A purchase this week would build on Strategy’s current 818,869 Bitcoin holdings which had a combined market cap of about $67.2 billion based on a market price of $77,996.91 at time of publications, according to StrategyTracker.com.

In addition to the purchase signal, both Saylor and Strategy’s official social media feeds showed posts encouraging retail shareholders, who own 80% of the company’s perpetual Stretch preferred stock (STRC), to vote on a proxy measure that would permit the company to make semi-monthly payouts to STRC shareholders.

Strategy is proposing to pay semi-monthly dividends on STRC, instead of monthly. The company claims that if approved and adopted, it will lead to reduced reinvestment lag, enhanced liquidity, market efficiency and increased price stability.

Ethena [$ENA] has posted a struggling price performance in the past day despite the protocol recording its highest monthly earnings in eight months.

Demand continues to build at the fundamental level, but the probability of a rally remains slim. However, a key demand zone on the chart could lift price significantly if it holds.

Decoding Ethena’s monthly earnings
Ethena’s earnings have now reached the highest level since September 2025. According to its earnings report, which tracks profitability, Ethena generated about $605,000 in just the first seventeen days of this month.

Earnings data of this nature often signals that a protocol is performing positively and adds further incentive for investors to accumulate or maintain a long-term position in $ENA.

That long-term view is already in motion, as reflected by the Total Value Locked (TVL).

TVL measures the total value of crypto assets deposited into a protocol’s smart contracts, spanning liquidity provision, lending, and yield generation. A rising TVL typically signals growing user confidence in the protocol and increasing demand for its products.

Notably, Ethena’s TVL has risen by about $998 million since the 23rd of April, reflecting growing investor confidence as more capital is deployed into the protocol and signaling belief in its near‑ to long‑term utility.

In May 2018, Bitcoin crashed from nearly $10,000 to about $7,000 by the end of the month. It happened again in May 2022, when Bitcoin fell nearly 30% from about $40,000 to $28,500 before falling further in June to $20,000.
With 2026 also a bear market year coinciding with a US mid-term election, there are concerns it could happen again.
“The most brutal pattern in Bitcoin history. Nobody wants to hear this. But the pattern is perfect. Mid-term election years. Bitcoin dumps. Every time,” crypto analyst Merlijn Enkelaar said on Sunday.

Enkelaar said a similar move could see Bitcoin prices collapse to $33,000 despite the advancement of key legislation, the CLARITY Act, positive crypto sentiment from the Trump administration and potential trade deals between the US and China.
Joao Wedson, founder and CEO of Alphractal, also said Sunday that there would be a higher probability of a new capitulation phase if Bitcoin remains under $78,000, with bears “showing signs of strength.”

Bitcoin drops to $77K, triggering $526M in liquidations
Bitcoin plunged to $77,000, and the leveraged traders who bet it wouldn’t did not have a good time. Over $526 million in crypto positions were liquidated in just one hour, with the vast majority coming from long positions.

What happened
Bitcoin had been testing the $79K to $80K resistance zone and failing to punch through. When that rejection turned into a slide below $77K, it set off a cascade of forced liquidations across major exchanges.

Liquidation, for the uninitiated, is what happens when a leveraged trader’s position moves against them far enough that the exchange closes it automatically to prevent further losses.

Ethereum Devs Clash Over Rising Data Costs
The Ethereum network is approaching a critical infrastructure bottleneck, sparking intense debate among developers over how to handle the blockchain's rapidly growing "state size."

At the center of the controversy is a proposed network upgrade, EIP-8037, which aims to curb data bloat by significantly increasing the upfront gas costs for developers deploying new smart contracts and storage slots.

There seems to be an economic flaw in Ethereum's current design: developers pay a one-time fee to write data to the blockchain, but network nodes are forced to pay the ongoing costs to store that data forever.

The state storage problem

Ethereum's "state" is the snapshot of all current account balances, smart contract code, and data stored on the network. Unlike transaction history, which can be archived, the state must be actively maintained and readily accessible by nodes to process new transactions.

According to network researcher @marilyn100x, the current model is unsustainable. If the network operates at a 100 million gas limit, Ethereum adds approximately 553 MiB of new permanent data daily, equating to roughly 197 GiB of new state data per year.

Currently, the Ethereum state sits at approximately 390 GiB. At the current growth rate, the network is projected to hit a critical "danger zone" of 650 GiB in less than 1.6 years. If the state becomes too large, it dramatically increases the hardware requirements to run a node, which threatens to centralize the network by pricing out average participants.

To prevent the network from hitting this limit, developers have proposed EIP-8037. Instead of time-weighted rent, the proposal acts as a deterrent by significantly raising the upfront gas costs required to create new contracts, accounts, and storage slots. Developers are incentivized to write more efficient code and avoid treating Ethereum's base layer as a cheap database.

The narrative

The Senate Banking Committee advanced its crypto market structure bill, the Clarity Act, to the Senate floor with a bipartisan 15-9 vote on Thursday, bringing the bill a step closer to passage into law.

Why it matters

The bill passing out of committee seemed to be a foregone conclusion by Wednesday. What's more interesting is that two Democrats — Senators Ruben Gallego and Angela Alsobrooks — voted for it, and several others signaled they might vote for it on the Senate floor with certain changes. The bill needs at least seven Democrats to vote for it, assuming all 43 Republicans vote in favor of the bill, on the floor, to go to the House.

Breaking it down

There are a few conclusions we can maybe immediately draw:

The crypto industry's hopes that this would get bipartisan support have so far borne out — even lawmakers who did not vote for the bill in committee suggested they might be persuaded to vote for it on the Senate floor.
Ethics still seems like the biggest stumbling block still left, but various lawmakers at the hearing on Thursday suggested it was not a debilitating blocker.
There are some compromises that the crypto industry at large may not love, but the overall bill has a higher chance of passage now than it did a week ago.
