Monday's ceasefire trade lasted about 18 hours.

Bitcoin climbed 3.1% to $70,352 on Tuesday morning, recovering from the weekend's slide below $68,000, with ether (ETH), solana's SOL, dogecoin and xrp gaining between 2-4%.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Saudi Arabia has agreed to give the U.S. military access to King Fahd Air Base, reversing its earlier position that its bases couldn't be used to attack Iran. The UAE has taken similar steps.

Gulf states joining the war directly would transform the conflict from a U.S.-Israel operation into a broader regional coalition, a significant escalation from what markets had been pricing.

Iran's deputy speaker ruled out talks with the U.S., echoing the Fars news agency denial from Monday evening. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively shut with only a trickle of vessels making their way through.

Traditional markets responded immediately. S&P 500 futures fell 0.5%. European shares were set to drop 0.8% at the open. Brent crude jumped 4% to about $104. The dollar strengthened 0.3%. Gold fell 1.5%, extending what is now its longest daily losing streak on record.

The gold collapse continues to be the most disorienting signal in global markets. A safe-haven asset falling to record losing streaks during an active and widening war breaks every historical precedent.

The most likely explanation is forced selling by funds facing margin calls across other positions, with gold being the most liquid asset to sell. But whatever the cause, it makes bitcoin's relative stability even more notable. The token that's supposed to be the volatile one is holding a range while the one that's supposed to be steady is in freefall.

Market pressure on gold is increasingly tied to expectations of prolonged inflation and fiscal expansion, as economist and gold advocate Peter Schiff outlined on March 23 in posts on X. His analysis pointed to war-driven deficits and monetary responses as key forces shaping long-term price direction.

Gold falling in recent trading reflected a sharp reversal from record levels as investors reduced exposure to the metal despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, with losses accelerating on Monday. The drop from all-time highs saw gold retreat from approximately $5,608 per ounce in late January to around $4,429, marking a decline of about $1,179 or a 21% correction, while prices slid 1.3% during Monday trading and briefly plunged toward $4,100 intraday.

The sell-off intensified after a social media post from President Donald Trump announced a five-day moratorium on planned military strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure, citing progress in talks, which removed the war-driven premium supporting gold. Schiff opined:

“In the early months of the 2008 GFC [global financial crisis], gold crashed 32%, about 40% of its prior bull-market gain. After gold bottomed, it surged 178% over the next three years. Gold nearly hit $4,100 today, down 27%, about 40% of its gain since $2K. A 178% surge from that low puts gold at $11,400.”

At the time of writing, it had recovered slightly and was trading at around $70,654 – Up about 3% in 24 hours. This suggested that buyers may be trying to turn $70K into a strong support level, instead of letting it break again.

However, there’s a bigger story beyond Bitcoin’s ups and downs. While BTC is moving sideways, attention may be slowly shifting towards altcoins. Simply put, the focus is no longer just on whether Bitcoin [BTC] will recover, it’s about whether its stability around $70K could trigger the next wave of growth in altcoins.

Analysts are rooting for altcoin season

Even though signs point to a possible altcoin season, current volatility is mainly driven by global tensions, not crypto issues. As Zach Humphries noted, the drop below $70,000 was a reflection of market fear from geopolitical uncertainty.

Interestingly, Bitcoin has still outperformed gold, silver, and stocks – A sign that it’s being seen as a hedge. Thus, while analysts are viewing the $65,000–$70,000 range as a value zone, they are being cautious, waiting for better entry points.

As Humphries added,

I think we’re still in the middle of this bear market.

On the contrary, analysts who are in favour of altcoins believe this cycle looks a lot like what happened in 2021.

According to the press release, Bitmine has already secured 3.86% of Ethereum’s circulating supply. Hence, it now moves closer to its long-term goal of controlling up to 5% of the total $ETH supply.

The firm acquired assets at a faster pace in recent weeks. Moreover, its weekly $ETH purchases rose above previous averages, signaling aggressive accumulation.
