Crypto code commits fall 75% as developers move to Al projects Blockchain ecosystems are losing developers across the board while artificial intelligence projects dominate growth on GitHub, the world's largest platform for hosting and collaborating on software code.

Weekly crypto commits (publishing new code) to repositories have fallen roughly 75% since early 2025, dropping from about 850,000 to 210,000, while active developers declined 56% to around 4,600, according to data from analytics platform Artemis.

Repositories track where developers are writing code, building tools and launching new projects, they offer one of the clearest signals of where software innovation is happening.

The contraction stands in stark contrast to the broader software ecosystem. GitHub added about 36 million developers in 2025 alone, bringing its global base to more than 180 million, with platform-wide commits rising roughly 25% year over year, according to GitHub's Octoverse report.

Much of that growth is flowing into artificial intelligence. GitHub now hosts more than 4.3 million Al-related repositories.

The number of repos importing large language model software development kits surged about 178% to more than 1.1 million over the past year, while generative Al projects now attract more than 1 million monthly contributors.

The numbers suggest developers are reallocating time toward Al infrastructure rather than blockchain.

As the cryptocurrency market showed minimal strength over the past week, institutional investors continued to exhibit interest in several assets, as evidenced by net inflows into BlackRock’s spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

In this line, the world’s largest investment manager accumulated more than $600 million worth of cryptocurrencies in a week, led by strong inflows into its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and modest buying in the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA).

Data for the period between March 9 and March 13 shows that BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF attracted about $600.1 million in net inflows.

The fund recorded $109.3 million in inflows on March 9, followed by $185.8 million on March 10, $115.3 million on March 11, $46.1 million on March 12, and $143.6 million on March 13.


In comparison, inflows into BlackRock’s Ethereum ($ETH) ETF were significantly smaller and more volatile. The fund posted $32.4 million in inflows on March 13, $18.7 million on March 12, and $18.8 million on March 11, while March 10 saw no flows.

However, the week began with a $55.1 million outflow on March 9, leaving the fund with a net weekly inflow of roughly $14.8 million tied to Ethereum.

Across both funds combined, BlackRock accumulated about $614.9 million worth of cryptocurrency exposure during the five-day period.



Overall, the data indicate a clear divergence in institutional demand between the two largest digital assets. While Ethereum flows were mixed and relatively modest, Bitcoin ETFs experienced consistently strong inflows throughout the week, with BlackRock’s IBIT accounting for the majority of the capital entering the market.

Crypto broker Bitpanda bets on banks and tokenization to expand globally ahead of IPO plans

Vienna, Austria-based crypto broker Bitpanda is leaning into a strategy it has been quietly building for years: keep its retail business anchored in Europe while expanding globally by supplying crypto infrastructure to banks and financial firms.

The company’s next phase of growth will focus less on raw user numbers and more on geographic reach, Vishal Sacheendran, vice president of global markets strategy and operations, told CoinDesk in an interview.

"It’s about having a footprint in more markets," Sacheendran said.

That expansion is building on its steady growth. The company, which boasts more than 7 million users, reported this week €371 million ($430 million) in adjusted revenue for 2025, up 16% from the previous year, while its registered user base increased 25% to 7.4 million.

The firm is also weighing a public listing. Bitpanda is reportedly preparing for a potential IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange as early as the first half of 2026, targeting a valuation between EUR 4 billion and EUR 5 billion. The plan comes as multiple crypto exchanges and infrastructure firms have either gone public or are planning to do so.

Finance professor Derek Horstmeyer flagged the risk of persistent inflation in a recent interview.

American consumers will feel the pinch from the Iran conflict even if stocks and the dollar don't, one market guru says.

Derek Horstmeyer, a finance professor at George Mason University's Costello College of Business, says it's striking how the S&P 500 and the greenback have responded to a major military engagement.

It's "hard to believe that you could start a war" that sparks the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — shutting off 20% of the global oil supply and spiking crude prices to over $100 a barrel — and have the S&P 500 down just 2% over the past month, Horstmeyer told Business Insider by phone this week.

The benchmark index is a "lot more insulated" from oil-price shocks today than 50 years ago, he said. That's because the tech giants that dominate the market-weighted index are much less reliant on crude than General Electric, Exxon Mobil, and other market heavyweights of the past.

Consumers aren't so lucky; Horstmeyer said, "There is no way this is good" for them. Even if the war ends soon, it will take weeks for the oil supply chain to recover, he said. The upshot is gasoline prices are likely to remain around $3 to $4 a gallon for the next month at least, he added.
