Why Bitcoin Miners With Megawatts Already Win

Building a new data center from scratch means waiting in grid interconnection queues that stretch to 2028 and beyond. Bitcoin miners already skipped that line.

They have the land. The power contracts. The cooling systems. The grid relationships. That is years of lead time already locked in.

Sigel pointed out that miners still trade at a massive discount to data center peers on a market-cap-per-megawatt basis. The market is either ignoring Al demand entirely or betting miners cannot execute. Industry numbers suggest execution is already happening. Public miners are targeting a jump from 7 GW today to 20 GW by 2027. There is also a grid services angle that most people overlook. Miners can cut their load on demand. That flexibility is becoming genuinely valuable as Al clusters and reshoring pile pressure onto domestic grids. Miners can simply switch off when the grid needs power. Nobody loses electricity. Miners just lose a little revenue. That is now a sellable service.

Al data center demand is growing at 24% annually through 2030. For miners holding the right infrastructure, that is not just a tailwind. That is a full repricing event waiting to happen.

When US regulators approved spot Ethereum ETFs in 2024, they excluded staking entirely from the products.

That meant anyone who moved their ETH into an ETF had to forgo their staking income to do so. For many holders, that was a dealbreaker, and they stayed out.

BlackRock just closed that gap. The firm launched the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ticker: ETHB) on Nasdaq this week, making it the third crypto ETF in its lineup, following IBIT for Bitcoin and ETHA for spot Ethereum.

First day trading volume came in above $15 million, which Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart called a very solid Day One for an ETF launch.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that HSBC, Hong Kong’s largest bank by assets, and a joint venture led by Standard Chartered are set to be among the first companies to receive the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) stablecoin licenses this month.

Authorities are reportedly prioritizing institutions already authorized to issue banknotes and will approve the two banks in the first batch, according to people familiar with the matter. Notably, the HKMA favors bank-led stablecoin issuers due to their robust capital base and ability to ensure greater safety while facilitating wider adoption, the sources affirmed.

Last month, the financial authority’s Chief Executive, Eddie Yue, announced it would grant the first, limited batch of stablecoin provider licenses in March as the review of 36 applications was nearly completed.

The HKMA enacted the Stablecoins Ordinance last August, which directs any individual or entity seeking to issue any fiat-referenced stablecoin (FRS) in Hong Kong, or any Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)-denominated token, to obtain a license from the financial regulator.

The number of licenses and the timetable had not yet been finalized and were subject to change. However, sources suggested March 24 as a possible date, as revealed by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), which first broke the news.

Industry sources suggested that Hong Kong’s licensing regime will initially prioritize the local currency. Standard Chartered has already announced plans to issue a Hong Kong dollar-pegged token.

Bitcoin can survive 72% of the world's submarine cables being cut, but a targeted attack on five hosting providers could cripple it


Bitcoin's network has been running nonstop since 2009. The question nobody had rigorously answered until now is what it would actually take to break it.

Researchers at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance last week published the first longitudinal study of Bitcoin blockchain's resilience to physical infrastructure disruption, analyzing 11 years of peer-to-peer network data against 68 verified submarine cable fault events.

The headline finding is that between 72% and 92% of the world's inter-country submarine cables would need to fail simultaneously before Bitcoin experiences significant node disconnection.

In a world where the Strait of Hormuz is currently disrupted and infrastructure vulnerability is front of mind, the study provides the first empirical benchmark for how hard Bitcoin actually is to knock offline.

The numbers tell a story of a network that degrades gracefully rather than collapsing catastrophically. The researchers ran 1,000 Monte Carlo simulations per scenario across the full dataset and found that random cable failures barely register.

Over 87% of the 68 real-world cable fault events they studied caused less than 5% node impact. The largest single event, when seabed disturbances off Côte d'Ivoire damaged 7-8 cables simultaneously in March 2024, knocked out 43% of regional nodes but affected only 5-7 bitcoin nodes globally, roughly 0.03% of the network.

The correlation between cable failures and bitcoin's price was essentially zero, at -0.02. Infrastructure disruptions are invisible against daily price volatility.


But the paper's most important finding is the asymmetry between random and targeted attacks.
