Tether Gold (XAUt), Tether's tokenized gold product, saw its 24-hour trading volume spike above $300 million over the weekend
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan says the weekend's geopolitical conflict has accelerated his view about how quickly traditional financial infrastructure will shift to blockchain-based settlement, cutting his prior estimate of five to 10 years substantially shorter.

In a post titled "The Weekend That Changed Finance," Hougan described how crypto platforms stepped in as the primary venue for trading real-world assets after major stock exchanges were closed when global tension escalated on Saturday.

Hyperliquid, a crypto perpetual futures platform, handled more than $11.5 billion in trading volume across Saturday and Sunday as investors sought exposure to crude oil, tokenized gold, and other assets that traditional markets could not price in real time. Bloomberg cited the Hyperliquid crude oil contract as the most relevant price reference when reporting on how oil markets responded to the attack, Hougan noted.

"For most of Sunday, on-chain finance was the center of the financial world," Hougan said, adding that blockchain's 24/7 trading infrastructure now makes stock exchanges and T+1 settlement appear outdated by comparison. He said hedge funds, banks, and other active investors who want to trade competitively have little choice but to set up stablecoin wallets and learn to operate on platforms like Hyperliquid.

Tether Gold (XAUt), Tether's tokenized gold product, saw its 24-hour trading volume spike above $300 million over the weekend. Prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket also recorded elevated volumes as investors sought outlets for event-driven positioning that traditional markets could not accommodate.

Europol, FBI wipe major cybercrime forum LeakBase off the web

An international law enforcement operation involving the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Europol and other agencies has taken down one of the internet’s most notorious cybercrime forums, LeakBase.

The forum was a place for hackers to buy and sell stolen data and cybercrime tools, amassing more than 142,000 members and over 215,000 messages.

“The FBI, Europol, and law enforcement agencies from around the world executed a takedown of LeakBase, one of the largest online cybercriminal platforms, seizing users’ accounts, posts, credit details, private messages, and IP logs for evidentiary purposes,” the FBI cyber division assistant director Brett Leatherman said in a statement on Wednesday.

LeakBase takedown involved 14 countries

The takedown operation, which ran on March 3 and 4, involved law enforcement agents and officers in 14 countries taking synchronized actions against LeakBase and its users.

Following the operation, authorities replaced the site with seizure banners, issued prevention notices to members, and collected additional evidence.
Law enforcement also executed search warrants and arrests in the United States, Australia, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom.

“The takedown of this cyber forum disrupts a major international platform that cybercriminals use to obtain and profit from the theft of sensitive personal, banking, and account credentials,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

While there was no specific reference to crypto-related accounts, its predecessor cybercrime marketplace Raidforums, which was shut down in 2022, previously hosted leaked data containing approximately “272,000 detailed personal information” of users of crypto wallet firm Ledger.
