Bitcoin's Sharpe Ratio slides to lowest since 2022. Here's what it means.


Bitcoin $BTC$62,867.66 has dropped by 28% so far this year, a brutal slide that looks even worse through the lens of the Sharpe Ratio, a metric professional investors use to determine what slice of their portfolio should be allocated to a specific asset.

The Sharpe Ratio is the gold standard for measuring risk-adjusted returns and was developed by Nobel Prize-winning economist William F. Sharpe.

Bitcoin's 365-day rolling Sharpe Ratio plummeted to -21 at the end of June, the lowest since late 2022, according to data source CryptoQuant. It was recently hovering just short of -20.

This deeply negative reading indicates that a bitcoin investor over the period took on extra market volatility while generating a return far worse than they could have earned on a risk-free investment, such as the 10-year U.S. Treasury note. The benchmark bond recently offered a yield of around 4.45%.

The Sharpe Ratio is calculated by subtracting the risk-free rate from the asset's total return over a specific period, then dividing the result by the asset's standard deviation (a measure of price volatility). A positive ratio means investors are being rewarded for taking the volatility risk. A negative ratio suggests they are being punished.

Professional investors don't just look at a coin's price relative to its long-term average to assess whether it's cheap. They use metrics such as the Sharpe Ratio to determine position sizing.

SHIB attempted a modest recovery after displaying signs of stabilization in late June, but it soon encountered intense selling pressure, which strengthened the larger bearish structure that has dominated the asset for months. SHIB is still stuck below all of the major moving averages on the daily chart. The 100-day and 200-day moving averages are still well above the current price levels, indicating how weak the longer-term trend is, while the 50-day EMA continues to function as dynamic resistance. Shiba Inu failed to breakthrough Throughout the year, every attempt at recovery has eventually been sold into, and the most recent rejection seems to fit the same pattern. Technically speaking, SHIB recently broke down from a rising wedge formation that had been forming from March to May. These patterns usually end in a decline, and the ensuing drop supported that bearish view. Since then, the asset has had trouble generating significant buying momentum.

The impetus comes from inflation breakevens, which measure the market's expectations of future price increases by comparing regular government bonds to inflation-protected ones. The two-year breakeven has dropped below 2% (check the Daily Signal), which is the Fed's target for inflation. The longer-term breakevens have also dropped sharply in recent weeks.
Notably, both the two-year breakeven rate and WTI oil prices, which influence inflation, have slipped to levels last seen before the onset of the Iran war in late February.

Peter Brandt, a seasoned investor and a closely followed figure in the financial markets, has announced that he is considering selling a portion of his Bitcoin holdings and investing in gold.

Brandt, in a post on the social media platform X, stated that gold may be preparing for a strong upward move against Bitcoin. This assessment has reopened the debate among investors regarding the balance between gold, seen as a safe haven, and high-risk digital assets.

Although both assets have seen pullbacks recently, the performance difference is striking. Bitcoin lost approximately 20 percent of its value in June, falling below the $60,000 level. During the same period, gold experienced an 11.7 percent drop, falling to around $4,000 per ounce.

Looking at the period since the beginning of the year, Bitcoin’s total loss has reached 28%, while gold’s decline has been more limited at 3.9%. This indicates that gold has shown more resilience compared to Bitcoin in recent months.

Another key element highlighted in the analysis was the XAU/BTC chart. This chart, which shows the price of gold in terms of Bitcoin, indicates that the downward trend that has continued since 2019-2020 has recently slowed and has begun to move upwards again.

According to market observers, this outlook could mark the beginning of a new cycle where capital may start shifting back from Bitcoin to gold.

Peter Brandt’s remarks indicate that, in a period of increased macroeconomic uncertainty and fluctuating risk appetite, investors are reassessing their portfolio allocation.

Experts acknowledge that Bitcoin retains its long-term growth potential, but note that in the short term, capital flows shifting towards more traditional safe havens like gold could impact market dynamics.

According to Saylor, Bitcoin’s strongest feature is that its rules cannot be arbitrarily changed. Therefore, Saylor states that Bitcoin’s base layer will operate with a more conservative approach in the future, requiring a much higher threshold of proof and consensus for any changes to the protocol.

Bitcoin’s latest rally pushed it to a two-week high above $63,000 over the weekend before cooling off.

According to market data from CoinGecko, Bitcoin briefly touched nearly $63,900 during the US holiday weekend before retreating toward $63,200 on Monday, holding on to most of its weekly gains after rising more than 5% over the past seven days.

The weekend advance was driven by a combination of weaker-than-expected US economic data, renewed demand through spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and a wave of short liquidations that accelerated the move higher.

Fresh optimism emerged after the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy added only 57,000 jobs in June, well below forecasts of 110,000.

The weaker labour report prompted traders to dial back expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening, easing pressure on Treasury yields while reducing the opportunity cost of holding assets such as Bitcoin.

Supporting that view, CME Group's FedWatch Tool showed markets assigning nearly an 80% probability that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged at its July meeting, while QCP Capital said softer inflation data would still be needed before markets could fully price in a more accommodative policy outlook.

The macro backdrop coincided with a heavily short-positioned derivatives market after Bitcoin spent much of June trading near the $58,000-$60,000 range.

Once the price reclaimed the psychologically important $62,000 level, short sellers were forced to close positions, triggering a rapid squeeze.

Market commentator Daan Crypto Trades described the move as a classic short squeeze, noting that prices climbed into a heavily shorted zone before forced covering intensified the rally.
