Bitcoin price faces midweek squeeze that will decide whether $60,000 holdsBitcoin price faces back-to-back tests this week, with May PCE coming out on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. EDT and more than $10 billion in Bitcoin options settling on Deribit at 08:00 UTC Friday in the quarterly expiry that closes the second quarter.

Bitcoin is trading near $62,500 after a rough June that briefly pushed it under $60,000 and left it ranging between $62,000 and $67,000.

A surprise in the inflation print could land while billions in contracts are already sliding toward settlement, with the hedging that follows risking a sharper move than the data alone would produce.

We've seen this play out once already this year. On March 27, $14.1 billion in Bitcoin options and $2.2 billion in Ethereum contracts expired into a market hit by an oil shock, rising yields, and fading rate-cut hopes, and Bitcoin dropped toward $66,200 that morning as dealer hedging turned an ordinary drop into a faster one.

A hot PCE inflation backdrop
The last PCE report gave the Fed cover to stay tight, with headline PCE rising 3.8% in April from a year earlier, nearly double the 2% target, and core holding at 3.3%, its highest since October 2023.

Thursday's release covers data for May and follows a 6.5% annual jump in producer prices, the fastest since November 2022, driven by energy costs tied to the Iran conflict that tend to feed consumer inflation with a lag.

The Fed has leaned into that data. At Kevin Warsh's first meeting on June 17, the committee held its rate at 3.50%-3.75%, dropped its easing language, and raised its year-end PCE forecast to 3.6% from 2.7%.

Bitcoin ETF trends have been receiving more attention recently following the withdrawal of record amounts from the Bitcoin ETF funds in the United States without any significant decline in investor participation. According to the most recent market figures, even though there has been a fast exit of institutional money from the Bitcoin ETFs, the overall investor base remains unchanged. This peculiar situation of outflows and unchanged investor base indicates a consolidating market.

Historic ETF Redemptions Seen

Market reports show that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen a total of about $6.35 billion in net outflows during the current rolling 30-day period. It marks the biggest withdrawal period out of 582 periods monitored by market experts.

As noted in the market update by crypto analyst Blockchain, using data by Galaxy Research, the extent of capital flowing out of Bitcoin ETFs was stressed. While historic outflows have been observed in 2024 and 2025, none could match the current extent of ETF redemptions.

Price of Bitcoin Is Showing Resilience

Despite the large outflows, Bitcoin has exhibited resilience in the market. In past market cycles, such outflows have been associated with considerable bearish pressure on prices. But currently, there has been a different development.

Bitcoin continues trading at a high level despite the outflow of institutional capital from the ETFs. The surge that took Bitcoin above the $100,000 mark was primarily fueled by ETF inflows, but despite ETF outflows, the gains made during that period have persisted.

Bitcoin’s decline coincided with a sharp drop in oil prices after reports of progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations and a 60-day waiver allowing purchases of Iranian crude pushed Brent crude to its lowest level in nearly three months.

At the same time, a selloff in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks weighed on risk sentiment across global markets, while gold fell roughly 1.5% and silver slid more than 5% as traders unwound defensive positions.

Crypto derivatives markets amplified the selloff, with over $600 million in liquidations recorded in 24 hours, the bulk of which came from long positions.

Meanwhile, institutional demand remains weak after U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs entered one of their longest outflow streaks this year, removing a key source of demand that had previously helped cushion selling pressure in the spot market. Coinbase’s premium has also remained negative, suggesting U.S. investors have been selling rather than accumulating during recent sessions.

Although diplomatic developments have eased fears of an immediate Middle East supply shock, uncertainty continues to linger over the durability of the emerging agreement. As recent reports revealed, Iran’s President has rejected negotiations over the country’s ballistic missile program, while Tehran and Washington continue to dispute claims regarding nuclear inspections.
