Why is Crypto Crashing Hard Today? BTC, ETH and XRP Fall 5%

Crypto markets are in freefall on Monday, and for once the selling has nothing to do with anything specific to digital assets. Bitcoin fell to $62,400, down 4% on the day, Ethereum dropped 5.45% to $1,657 and XRP slid 4.36% to $1.09.

The total crypto market cap shed nearly $86 billion in 24 hours to sit at $2.14 trillion, with the Fear and Greed Index at 20 as selling accelerated across every major asset class simultaneously.

This is not a crypto story, it is a global liquidity story, and crypto is simply the most visible casualty.

South Korea Triggered a Circuit Breaker Again

The session’s most dramatic moment came from Seoul, where South Korea’s Kospi crashed 10% and triggered a circuit breaker for the second time this month. Samsung and SK Hynix both fell more than 12% after a local media report revealed that SK Hynix is slowing expansion of its newest AI memory chip and shifting focus to a lower-priced commodity-grade chip to cover a production shortfall.

Quarter-End Rebalancing Is Adding Pressure

JPMorgan warned this week that quarter-end rebalancing could force up to $165 billion in equity selling worldwide through June 30. Large pension funds and sovereign wealth funds are required to rebalance back to fixed stock-to-bond targets after a strong run in equities, and that mechanical selling is happening right now across global markets. The window does not close until the end of the month.

The Fed Is Not Helping

Nine of the Federal Reserve’s 19 policymakers are projecting at least one rate hike this year, and markets are now pricing a 70% probability of a hike by September. That single shift in expectations raises the cost of holding risk assets across the board. Crypto, which now shows a 97% correlation with the S&P 500, is feeling that repricing as directly as any equity index.

Chainlink is moving further into traditional finance research by joining a new cross-border working group focused on using stablecoins for foreign exchange (FX) settlement. The effort—announced alongside South Korean and European banking networks—targets how tokenized euro and won stablecoins could be exchanged via direct “atomic swap” mechanisms.

On Tuesday, Chainlink introduced Project Pangea with South Korean digital infrastructure firm FairSquareLab, the Unified Korea Alliance (UniKA)—a consortium that includes more than a dozen Korean commercial banks—and Qivalis, a euro stablecoin consortium backed by 37 European banks. The project is designed as a collaboration to evaluate settlement workflows rather than a consumer payment product.

Ric Edelman predicts CLARITY Act may unlock crypto floodgatesRic Edelman has predicted that up to 95% of institutions without crypto exposure could enter the market if the CLARITY Act becomes law.

In a recent interview, Edelman said the disconnect between crypto prices and industry activity has become increasingly noticeable as large financial firms continue expanding their blockchain and tokenization efforts.

While cryptocurrency markets have struggled to maintain momentum amid regulatory uncertainty, Edelman said major Wall Street institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Franklin Templeton, State Street, Invesco, and Fidelity, continue building products and services tied to digital assets.

“Crypto prices are not reflecting what’s happening in the world of crypto,” Edelman said, pointing to rising institutional engagement even as investors remain cautious.

Institutional demand continues to build
Drawing attention to recent industry surveys and conversations with market participants, Edelman said many institutions that currently have no crypto exposure are preparing to enter the sector.

According to Edelman, 95% of institutions that do not currently own crypto expect to make their first allocation this year. He added that roughly three-quarters of institutions that already hold digital assets intend to increase their existing exposure.

Even with those expectations, capital has not yet entered the market at the scale many industry participants anticipated. Edelman attributed part of that hesitation to uncertainty surrounding U.S. crypto legislation, periodic Bitcoin ETF outflows, and continued political opposition from lawmakers such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Career risk also remains a factor, according to Edelman, who said many decision-makers at financial firms remain more concerned about
