From a Banned Token to a Billion-User Blockchain

After the SEC challenged Telegram's 2018 private token sale, a US court blocked distribution of the original "Grams" token in 2020, and Telegram formally withdrew.

The reunion happened in stages. In January 2025, the TON Foundation announced that TON became the exclusive blockchain infrastructure powering Telegram's Mini App ecosystem. Toncoin became the only cryptocurrency accepted for non-fiat payments for Telegram services, including Telegram Stars, Telegram Premium, Telegram Ads, and Telegram Gateway.
