Why Is the Crypto Market Crashing Today?


Another wave of panic has hit the crypto market. Bitcoin is falling, Ethereum is bleeding, and altcoins are rapidly losing momentum as traders rush to exit leveraged positions. More than $660 million has already been wiped out in liquidations, turning what began as a pullback into a full-scale risk-off event. 

With sentiment collapsing and key technical levels breaking down, investors are now facing a difficult question: why is the crypto market crashing today and is the worse still ahead?

Liquidation Cascade Triggers Market-Wide Selloff

The biggest driver behind today’s decline appears to be the massive liquidation event across derivatives markets. More than $660 million worth of crypto positions were wiped out over the past 24 hours, with long traders suffering the overwhelming majority of losses. Bitcoin and Ethereum accounted for a large portion of these liquidations as leveraged positions were automatically closed.

Strategy now holds 847,363 BTC, but Bitcoin bulls still need proof!Strategy is raising funds through equity sales and using that to add more Bitcoin [BTC] to its arsenal! As it stands, sentiment is weak, so investors are not fully back in profit-taking mode. Hence, the timing here is very peculiar.

Strategy sells… and buys too!
Between 15 and 21 June, Strategy sold 2.71 million MSTR shares through its at-the-market program. They raised $335.5 million in net proceeds. The company then used part of that capital to buy 520 BTC for $34.9 million, at an average price of $67,068 per Bitcoin.As of 21 June, the company held 847,363 BTC, bought for a total of $64.1 billion at an average cost of $75,651 per coin. Its dollar reserves also rose to $1.4 billion.

Is the market very fragile?
Don’t let Strategy fool you though because the market doesn’t look like it’s recovering just yet.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s adjusted SOPR was still struggling around the key level of 1. Going above 1 usually means investors are selling coins at a profit while a move below 1 means losses are still being realized.On the charts though, there seemed to be no confirmation.

Profit-taking from long-term holders has gone weaker too, so the market may even still be resetting

BitGo to Offer Institutional DeFi Vaults, Morpho First PartnerUS-based BitGo, a crypto custody and infrastructure provider, unveiled plans for a decentralized finance (DeFi) vault product with Paris-based Morpho as its first partner, to meet institutional demand for access to onchain lending and yield strategies while providing regulated custody and oversight.

When clients deposit into the vault, their funds are deployed to a third-party onchain strategy, a 22 Jun statement said. BitGo Bank & Trust, the firm's national trust bank chartered by the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), holds a receipt token recording each client's claim. External infrastructure providers and independent risk managers will execute the strategies and set the risk parameters, with BitGo serving as the custodian of record.

Morpho Labs, which develops the protocol, will provide the underlying vault architecture, lending infrastructure and onchain execution systems that tap into increasing institutional interest in yield and lending opportunities onchain.

Custody layer addresses concerns
However, institutions have held back from DeFi amid worries about regulatory compliance with custody and asset controls. The new service adds a custody layer to users' assets to address those concerns.

"We believe institutions are looking for ways to access onchain opportunities but also expect the security and oversight that come with institutional custody," said Mike Belshe, CEO and co-founder of BitGo. The firm was founded in 2013 by Belshe and Ben Davenport and built its early business around multi-signature wallet security for institutional crypto holders.
