The largest cryptocurrencies remained under pressure for a fourth straight day, with bitcoin falling 2.5% in 24 hours to just below $62,400.

It's not alone. The CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) has dropped 3.3%, with ether (ETH), $XRP ($XRP) and solana ($SOL) all weaker. The CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Select Capped Index fell 4%, and the CoinDesk 80 and CoinDesk DeFi Select Index are following close behind.

Concerns about Strategy (MSTR), the Michael Saylor-led bitcoin treasury company, continue to dominate market sentiment, with particular focus on its dividend-paying preferred stock, STRC.

"Strategy, the largest listed $BTC holder, has watched its STRC preferred collapse below par, and the market is now openly pricing the tail that it has to sell coins to defend the structure," analysts at Marex said.

'Bitcoin Rodney' pleads guilty in $1.8 billion crypto fraud case
Rodney “Bitcoin Rodney” Burton pled guilty in federal court to conspiracy tied to HyperFund, a $1.8 billion cryptocurrency fraud scheme spanning June 2020 to January 2022.

A Miami crypto promoter known as Rodney “Bitcoin Rodney” Burton pleaded guilty in federal court for his role in the $1.8 billion HyperFund fraud scheme that operated between 2020 and 2022.

Burton admitted under a plea agreement that he conspired to provide unlicensed money-transmitting services while promoting HyperFund and routed investor funds through entities that were presented as consulting firms but functioned as payment conduits. He received at least $7,851,711 in proceeds linked to the operation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, HyperFund's promotional materials claimed investors who purchased "memberships" would receive between 0.5% and 1% daily in passive rewards until the company either doubled or tripled their initial investment.

The platform also cited revenue from large-scale crypto mining operations to justify the payouts, despite prosecutors saying no such operations existed. Withdrawals were later blocked beginning in 2021 as the scheme progressed.

Burton now faces a statutory maximum penalty of five years in federal prison for the conspiracy charge, with sentencing scheduled for July 23 before U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett.

Crypto-related fraud losses reached $11.4 billion in 2025, according to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center annual report released in April. 

The bureau received 181,565 crypto-related complaints, a 21% increase from 2024, with an average reported loss of $62,604. Investment scams accounted for $7.2 billion of those losses across 61,559 complaints.

One in five top UK SMEs is seeing demand for crypto payments, report finds


UK merchants have ranked cryptocurrency payments among emerging customer demands, even as security and payment simplicity remain their top priorities, according to a new whitepaper released by payment technology provider DECTA.

A new DECTA whitepaper shared with crypto.news, based on a survey of 500 UK SME decision-makers conducted by research firm Censuswide between March 13 and March 20, 2026, found that 11.8% of merchants believe their customers want the option to pay with cryptocurrency, while the figure rises to 20.7% among businesses with annual turnover between £50 million and £99.99 million.

The report placed crypto behind payment security, simplicity, speed, multiple payment options, refunds, guest checkout, Buy Now Pay Later, and open banking when merchants were asked about customer payment priorities. Payment security topped the list at 48.6%, followed by simplicity at 42.2% and speed at 37.2%. Cryptocurrency ranked eighth at 11.8%.

Scott Dawson, chief executive officer of DECTA and chairman of the Payments Innovation Forum, said alternative payment methods continue to gain traction among merchants. DECTA said BNPL emerged as a top customer priority for nearly 20% of respondents, while open banking and cryptocurrency attracted greater interest among larger businesses.
