Bitcoin falls back to $76,000 as Iran reportedly shuts Hormuz again


One of the biggest short squeezes of 2026 came and went in a single session.

Bitcoin climbed to $78,000 late Friday, triggering $762 million in liquidations across 168,336 traders with $593 million of that on the short side, per CoinGlass.

By Saturday evening hours in Asia, bitcoin had pulled back to $76,091, up just 0.8% on the day, as Iran broadcast that the Strait of Hormuz was closed to maritime traffic again less than 24 hours after its foreign minister declared it fully open.

Two tanker owners told Bloomberg their vessels received Iranian radio transmissions shutting the waterway, with one supertanker reporting gunfire and aborting transit.

State news agency Nour said Hormuz had returned to "strict management and control by the armed forces" in response to a U.S. blockade of Iranian shipping. Several oil tankers that had raced toward the strait Friday on the initial reopening news turned back.

Friday's breakout rally ended up in a $590 million shorts rout, with bets on bitcoin accounting for $381 million in liquidations, the largest share, followed by ether shorts at $167. Shorts outweighed longs by nearly four to one, the cleanest short-heavy breakdown in a liquidation event since February.

The setup had been building for weeks. Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals were pinned negative, meaning shorts were paying longs a premium to hold their positions.

Friday's Hormuz reopening was the catalyst that flipped it. Crude oil dropped nearly 10% to $85.90 per barrel on the initial headline, and bitcoin broke above the $76,000-$78,000 zone that has capped every rally attempt since the February 5 crash.

President Donald Trump then told reporters Friday night that Iran had agreed to an "unlimited" suspension of its nuclear program, though Tehran never confirmed the claim.

The cryptocurrency market saw a sharp influx of capital over the past 24 hours as sentiment turned positive following days of uncertainty.

As of press time, the total crypto market capitalization stood at $2.61 trillion, marking a 24-hour increase of $100 billion from the $2.51 trillion recorded a day earlier.

Leading the rally, Bitcoin (BTC) climbed toward the $80,000 level, trading around $77,080 at press time and posting a daily gain of roughly 2.8%. The asset’s move higher coincides with a broader breakout after weeks of consolidation, positioning it near its highest levels since early February.

At the same time, Ethereum (ETH) rose about 3% to trade above $2,400, while XRP advanced approximately 2.4% to $1.47. BNB followed with a similar upward move, trading near $643.

The primary catalyst behind the surge was a sudden de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

On April 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz had fully reopened to commercial shipping under an ongoing ceasefire framework.

The development, further amplified by supportive commentary from President Donald Trump, triggered a sharp drop in oil prices of around 11%.

One issue is technical: If quantum computing is powerful enough to crack Bitcoin's signature mechanism, how can the protocol respond? For example, new address types, migration rules, soft forks, abandonment mechanisms, key rotation, etc. This is indeed an engineering problem, but it remains an engineering problem.

The other issue is legal: Suppose someone uses a quantum computer to derive the private key of an old wallet and steals the Bitcoin within. What does this actually mean? Has he recovered abandoned property, or has he stolen someone else's Bitcoin?

Congress on verge of making regulated dollar stablecoins act almost like digital cash


Washington isn't trying to solve every crypto policy fight at once, but it appears to be carving out a workable path for one specific category of digital asset: the regulated, dollar-pegged stablecoin.

The $GENIUS Act established the first federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins, and a bipartisan House tax discussion draft now proposes friendlier tax treatment for those same tokens when people actually use them.

Together, the two efforts point toward a deliberate, stablecoins-first lane in American crypto policy that could reshape how users, merchants, and issuers interact with digital dollars in the years ahead.

What the stablecoin tax draft actually proposes

The draft legislation is the Digital Asset PARITY Act, a bipartisan discussion draft first released in December 2025 by Representatives Max Miller (R-Ohio) and Steven Horsford (D-Nevada), both members of the House Ways and Means Committee. An updated version was re-released on March 26, 2026, with significant revisions to its core stablecoin provision.

In the revised March draft, gains from selling a “regulated payment stablecoin” generally wouldn't be included in gross income, and losses wouldn't be recognized, unless the taxpayer's basis in the token falls below 99% of its redemption value.

For exchanges, the recipient would take a deemed basis of $1. To qualify, the stablecoin must be issued by a permitted payment stablecoin issuer under the $GENIUS Act, pegged only to the US dollar, and have demonstrated tight price stability over the prior 12 months. Brokers and dealers are excluded.

For ordinary people, this means spending a qualifying dollar stablecoin could stop triggering a small, irritating tax event every time the token's value drifts a fraction of a cent.
