Ethereum is preparing for one of its most important upgrades yet as the Ethereum Foundation confirmed major progress toward the upcoming “Glamsterdam” upgrade. The Foundation announced that Ethereum has now reached a 200 million gas target milestone, a major increase from the network’s current gas limit of around 60 million.

The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade is expected to significantly improve Ethereum’s layer-1 scalability and transaction processing efficiency. Developers say the upgrade will fundamentally change how Ethereum creates and verifies blocks, allowing the network to handle much larger transaction volumes while improving overall performance.

Originally expected in June 2026, the upgrade is now likely to launch sometime during the third quarter of 2026. Ethereum developers stated that live Glamsterdam development networks are already running as testing and optimization continue.

One of the most important achievements announced is the stabilization of enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation, also known as ePBS. This system allows validators to outsource block-building operations to specialized builders while integrating the process directly into Ethereum’s protocol rules. The goal is to improve scalability, reduce dependence on external relays, and safely support larger block sizes.

The Ethereum Foundation also finalized EIP-8037, a proposal focused on smarter data storage pricing. The update increases the cost of excessive state creation operations, helping Ethereum avoid uncontrolled blockchain state growth as gas limits expand.

At the same time, Ethereum developers are continuing work on future upgrades including Hegotà and the long-term Strawmap roadmap, which focuses on preparing Ethereum for future quantum computing challenges.

Galaxy Digital (GLXY) and Sharplink (SBET) are teaming up to put part of the latter’s staked $ETH treasury into decentralized finance (DeFi) strategies.

The Galaxy Sharplink Onchain Yield Fund would receive $100 million from Sharplink’s staked $ETH treasury and $25 million from Galaxy, the companies said.

Galaxy is set to manage the investment, which is expected to commence in the coming weeks under a non-binding memorandum of understanding.

The strategy will see capital deployed across DeFi liquidity protocols and other onchain yield strategies. The structure is designed to keep Sharplink’s core $ETH exposure intact while adding an active yield strategy to its balance sheet.

Sharplink holds 872,984 $ETH, according to separate first-quarter results. The company has generated 18,800 $ETH in staking rewards since launching its ether treasury strategy in June 2025, the firm said.

The allocation is small relative to Sharplink’s $ETH stack but large enough to mark a shift in the treasury model. At recent prices, $100 million equals roughly 43,000 $ETH.

One of the main reasons behind this price weakness is reduced market momentum in derivatives trading. This reflects uncertainty in the short-term direction of the market.

Another key factor is weaker on-chain activity compared to competing blockchains. This shift reduces immediate demand pressure on ETH.

ETF flows and institutional participation have also played a role. At times, outflows or slower inflows from Ethereum investment products have created additional resistance, preventing ETH from building strong upward momentum even during positive market conditions.

From a technical perspective, Ethereum has repeatedly failed to sustain moves above major resistance zones, leading to repeated rejections and sideways movement. At the same time, strong support levels continue holding, preventing deeper downside but also trapping price action in a narrow range.

Overall, Ethereum remains fundamentally strong, but the combination of weak derivatives demand, competitive pressure, and technical resistance is keeping it stuck below key breakout levels. A clear shift in momentum or stronger institutional inflows may be required for the next major upward move.

MARA Holdings (MARA) is still producing bitcoin , but it is getting harder to argue that mining is its core business.

In its first-quarter earnings statement, the company said it does not expect to make large-scale purchases of the specialist ASIC machines used in the process. Historically, big purchases have been the easiest way to read a miner’s growth plans. Less appetite for new machines means less emphasis on expanding pure mining capacity.

Instead, its power strategy is increasingly aimed at AI and high-performance computing. The company wants to place new infrastructure alongside existing mining operations, allowing it to generate bitcoin revenue while keeping the option to redirect power toward AI and critical IT loads as demand matures.

Around 90% of MARA’s non-hosted mining capacity could eventually be used for AI and IT infrastructure, the company said.

First-quarter revenue fell 18% from a year earlier to $174.6 million, the company said Monday. Its net loss widened to $1.3 billion, largely tied to unrealized losses on its 38,689 bitcoin. The largest cryptocurrency fell 17% in the 12-month period.

MARA said it sold $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin during the quarter to improve liquidity and retire debt. That includes a $1.1 billion sale near quarter-end to fund a convertible note repurchase. As a result, MARA dropped two places to become the fourth-largest publicly traded holder of bitcoin, according to Bitcoin Treasuries data cited in the filing notes.

Public miners spent much of the last cycle being valued partly on how much bitcoin they could mine and keep. MARA is now showing a different priority, using bitcoin as balance-sheet ammunition when needed.
