MARA stock has fallen 16% over the last 12 months, but has begun to mount a return this year as it has focused on pivoting to build artificial intelligence data centers.

The company reported its first-quarter losses were largely attributed to unrealized losses in its 38,689 Bitcoin treasury as the cryptocurrency fell 23% during the quarter. MARA said it sold more than 15,100 Bitcoin worth $1.1 billion in the final week of March.

MARA said that Bitcoin mining remains the company’s “operational foundation,” even as it continues expanding into AI and high-performance computing to pursue additional revenue streams.

MARA is one of several US-based Bitcoin miners that have seen profits turn into losses as challenging mining conditions continue to weigh on the sector.

Bitcoin's transparency was once considered one of its greatest strengths. Now, Ray Dalio says, it may be the very reason central banks won't adopt it as a reserve asset, even though corporations and institutional investors have embraced it.

The billionaire hedge fund manager, who is also a bitcoin investor, said on X that, "Bitcoin lacks privacy. Transactions can be monitored and potentially controlled, which is why central banks aren't looking to hold it."

Ray Dalio has previously said he allocates about 1% of his portfolio to bitcoin.

Bitcoin, the world's largest blockchain network, operates as a decentralized peer-to-peer system built on a public ledger. Every transaction is permanently recorded on this transparent ledger, allowing anyone to view it in real time.

Anyone can open a Bitcoin block explorer, enter a wallet address into the search bar, and view the entire transaction history associated with it. While wallet addresses are pseudonymous rather than directly tied to identities, blockchain analytics firms and law enforcement agencies can often trace the movement of funds and link activity back to individuals or institutions.

In other words, the flow of $BTC, the blockchain's native token, is highly transparent and traceable, even if it is not always directly tied to real-world identities.

This level of transparency, often praised by Bitcoin supporters, may also be what keeps central banks away. Imagine being a central bank and accumulating an asset whose flows can be tracked in real time on a public ledger.

The lack of privacy is also a concern for large institutional players. At Consensus Hong Kong in February, participants noted that the mass adoption of blockchain technology at the institutional level may ultimately depend on stronger privacy features, particularly for large transactions.

Strategy’s Phong Le pushed back against the idea that the company’s Bitcoin identity can be separated from its legacy software business, arguing that the two sides now reinforce each other operationally, financially, and culturally.

In a post on X, Le said Strategy’s success is “rooted in more than Bitcoin on our balance sheet,” framing the company’s enterprise software unit as a key part of the infrastructure behind its Bitcoin Treasury Company model. The comments come as the firm continues to be viewed primarily through the lens of its Bitcoin holdings, even as management seeks to highlight the operating business that predates its digital asset strategy.

“I’m sometimes asked why a Bitcoin Treasury Company should also operate a software business,” Le wrote. “The two create powerful and unique synergies. I plan to provide more regular updates on Strategy Software, and will start here with a foundational overview.”

Le said Q1 2026 was the software division’s strongest financial quarter in a decade. According to his post, software revenue rose 12%, led by 59% growth in cloud revenue, while controllable margin increased 27%. He said that margin expansion helped fund Strategy’s Bitcoin operating expenses, positioning the software business as more than a legacy asset sitting alongside the treasury strategy.

“Over the last six years, we transformed the software business while simultaneously becoming a Bitcoin Treasury Company,” Le wrote.

The scale of that business was central to his argument. Le said Strategy has 1,500 employees serving more than 3,000 customers, over 500,000 active users, and nearly half of the Fortune 500. Its customer base includes major banks, healthcare companies, retailers, and government agencies.

Bitcoin is trading above $80,000, according to CoinDesk market data, after recovering from Friday’s dip, but the rebound still looks more like a market testing resistance than a decisive move higher.

The market structure tells a more complicated story than the price alone, according to market observers.

Beneath bitcoin’s rebound, buyers are becoming more active, and structural support from ETFs remains intact, but much of the recent activity is also being amplified by leveraged futures traders rather than purely spot demand. That makes the recovery more vulnerable to a macro disappointment, particularly with inflation data looming.

Singapore-based market maker Enflux said in a note to CoinDesk that ETF demand and low exchange reserves are helping to build a structural floor for $BTC, while Glassnode’s market indicators in its most recent weekly report show buyers becoming more aggressive in both the spot and perpetual markets.

The problem is that the improvement is not clean. Momentum has eased, leverage has risen, and funding is showing more short-side demand, suggesting traders are still hedging against the rally rather than fully embracing it.

That leaves bitcoin in an awkward middle ground. $BTC is up 13.4% over the past 30 days and is holding above $81,000, but Friday’s reaction to the stronger-than-expected jobs report — strong numbers mean the Fed is less likely to cut rates — showed how sensitive the market remains to recent buyer cost bases. The headline number beat consensus, yet $BTC fell from about $82,000 to $79,743 before recovering over the weekend.

“A headline beat should have cleared $80,700 cleanly, but spot pulled back first,” Enflux wrote. “That level is real overhead, not just a chart marker.”
