U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled for May 9 through May 11, following direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The announcement was made Friday through Trump's Truth Social account, where he described the agreement as a possible turning point in the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war.According to Trump, the ceasefire will include a complete halt to kinetic military activity and a large-scale prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side. The proposed pause in fighting coincides with Victory Day celebrations, a significant World War I! commemoration observed in both Russia and Ukraine. Trump stated that both Putin and Zelenskyy accepted the request for a temporary suspension of hostilities, adding that ongoing negotiations are bringing both sides "closer to a resolution every day." He also referred to the ceasefire as a potential
"beginning of the end" for the deadly conflict that has continued for years and impacted global markets, energy prices, and geopolitical stability. The announcement follows several weeks of uncertainty surrounding peace negotiations and failed ceasefire attempts. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy suggested a truce beginning May 6 in response to a narrower Russian proposal. However, Zelenskyy later claimed Russian forces continued launching drone and missile strikes despite earlier discussions about pausing attacks. Speaking Thursday, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of achieving a lasting peace agreement rather than relying on temporary pauses in combat.

Meta’s Stablecoin Trials Under Scrutiny

This week, US Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a new letter to Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, raising concerns about the company’s plans to integrate stablecoins into the platform.

In the letter, the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee highlighted recent reports suggesting that Meta was conducting a “small and focused” trial with a third-party stablecoin and that the company plans to begin its integration in the second half of this year.

As reported by Bitcoinist, Meta began rolling out USDC payouts for select creators in Colombia and the Philippines last month, using Solana and Polygon as supported blockchain rails.

Warren affirmed that it is “essential” for the US Congress to fully understand the implications of Meta’s integration plans as it considers the crypto-market structure bill, the CLAIRTY Act.

“Any attempt to control, influence, or preference a stablecoin on Meta’s platforms–even a stablecoin issued by a third party–could have serious implications for competition, privacy, the integrity of our payments system, and financial stability,” she argued.

The Senator also raised concerns about the lack of transparency, underscoring Meta’s failed attempt to launch its own stablecoin six years ago. For context, the company announced its Libra project in 2019, but it was ultimately shut down in 2022 after massive pressure from US regulators and politicians.

115 Million XRP Withdrawn From Spot Exchanges, Is Demand Rising?

XRP exchange balances take a hit with $115 million withdrawn in last 24 hours.

According to CoinGlass data, XRP recorded $115.02 million in spot outflows in the last 24 hours, which represents XRP withdrawn from exchanges in the said timeframe. This exceeded spot inflows, which came in at $99.41 million, resulting in a negative net spot flow of -280.65%.

The XRP outflow suggests that investors are removing their coins from exchanges, which suggests accumulation and long-term holding rather than short-term selling, and may be a positive indicator of demand.

This is accompanied by a rise in open interest, an indicator of open positions, which is up 3.96% in the last 24 hours to $2.96 billion, according to CoinGlass data.

The timing of the withdrawals is notable as it coincides with a surge in XRP ETF inflows. According to Sosovalue data, XRP saw positive daily net inflow of $6.04 million on May 8.

Strategy CEO Explains Why They Might Sell Bitcoin – “I Believe in Math, Not Ideology”

Phong Le, CEO of Strategy, one of the world’s largest institutional Bitcoin holders, announced a significant change in the company’s Bitcoin management strategy. Speaking in an exclusive interview with CNBC, Le stated that they have shifted from a “never sell” approach to an active management model that maximizes shareholder value.

Phong Le stated that the company can now use its Bitcoin assets for liquidity and dividend payments when needed, instead of simply holding them. CEO Le said, “I believe in mathematics rather than ideology. If selling Bitcoin becomes a more profitable option than issuing new shares to pay dividends to our shareholders, we will do it.”

Le argued that the primary goal of this strategy was to increase the “amount of Bitcoin per share” and protect the rights of existing shareholders, adding that the Bitcoin sale would be evaluated specifically based on the relationship between the company’s book value and market price, and on tax advantages (profit/loss balance).

Responding to questions about the company’s preferred stock, “Stretch,” which offers a monthly return of 11.5%, Le reminded them of the company’s annual dividend obligation of $1.5 billion. Stating that they have the capacity to meet 18 months of dividends at current levels, Le reassured investors by saying, “We have approximately $60 billion in Bitcoin reserves to secure these payments.”

Addressing concerns about whether Strategy’s sales, given its massive market position, would affect the Bitcoin price, the CEO made the following statement:

“The Bitcoin market has a daily trading volume of over $60 billion. Our total annual dividend payments, however, are only $1.5 billion. On a daily basis, our transactions account for only a few basis points of the total liquidity. Therefore, we are not manipulating the market price upwards or downwards.”
