LayerZero apologized for its handling of the rsETH exploit fallout and admitted its 1/1 DVN model created security risks for high-value applications.



LayerZero Labs has admitted it made a critical security mistake by allowing its decentralized verifier network [DVN] to operate in a 1/1 configuration for high-value applications, as several protocols continue migrating away from its infrastructure following April’s rsETH exploit.

In a lengthy statement published on 8 May, the company apologized for its communication around the incident. Also, it acknowledged that its own internal RPC infrastructure used by the LayerZero Labs DVN was compromised during the attack.

“We made a mistake by allowing our DVN to act as a 1/1 DVN for high-value transactions,” the company said. “We didn’t police what our DVN was securing, which created a risk we simply didn’t see.”

The comments mark LayerZero’s clearest concession yet after weeks of criticism from protocols and security researchers following the roughly $292 million rsETH exploit linked to KelpDAO’s LayerZero bridge infrastructure.

On Friday, the company said a cooling failure inside Amazon Web Services (Nasdaq: AMZN), helped trigger a multi-hour outage that hit trading, exchange access, and balance updates across its platform.

The problem began at roughly 23:50 UTC on May 7th when internal monitors detected a widespread breakout of quote failures within the company’s systems.

At that point, several Sev1 incidents were created by the engineers, and customers were already impacted in terms of services like spot trading, Coinbase Prime, International, derivatives, Retail, Advanced, and Institutional exchanges.

Brian Armstrong, who is the CEO of Coinbase, wrote on X that his company “experienced an outage” and that such an occurrence was “never acceptable.” According to him, the reason behind it was “a room overheating in an AWS data center due to multiple chillers failing.”

According to Brian, the company ensures that all their services are designed in such a way that they do not go offline in case one AWS availability zone fails. The majority of services are structured this way, except for the exchange, which uses a different infrastructure due to its high latency demands.

Manhattan federal judge has cleared the way for Aave’s recovery effort to move forward after last month’s North Korea-linked rsETH exploit, allowing $71 million in frozen ether to be transferred out of Arbitrum while preserving North Korean terrorism victims’ legal claim on the funds.

In a two-page order published late Friday U.S. time, Judge Margaret Garnett modified a restraining notice previously served on Arbitrum DAO to allow an onchain governance vote transferring the immobilized ETH to a wallet controlled by Aave LLC.

The order also shields participants from liability under the notice, stating that anyone who initiates, votes on or participates in the transfer would not violate the freeze.

Judge Garnett's ruling follows an earlier off-chain Snapshot temperature check in which Arbitrum delegates overwhelmingly signaled support for returning the frozen ETH as part of Aave’s broader recovery plan. Any actual transfer, however, still requires a separate binding onchain governance vote.

That’s according to publications in Poland, where the Estonia-licensed platform was the leading trading venue for digital assets until just a few weeks ago.

Its CEO, Przemysław Kral, has been missing since he denied reports that the company’s reserves had dropped by more than 99% over the past months.

Kral was initially thought to have fled to Israel, where he is a citizen, in order to avoid extradition. It turns out he is now in the United Arab Emirates.

This week, a leading Polish news outlet, Onet Wiadomości, revealed Zonda’s official manager is in Dubai, together with a man identified as Marian W.

Better known by his nickname Maniek, the latter was the top dog of the crypto business, while Kral was just a “front man,” the website unveiled.

He was also the actual creator of the exchange, the article added, quoting a source from Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office familiar with the ongoing probe.

The coin trading platform started as BitBay in 2014, a crypto service provider founded by Sylwester Suszek, who later sold it. Onet claims he was a puppet, too.

Maniek introduced Suszek to his friend, lawyer Przemysław Kral, who rebranded the exchange to Zondacrypto when he took over its management in 2021.

Kral then moved its headquarters to Estonia, and the platform has since been operated by BB Trade, an entity registered in the Baltic state.

Suszek suddenly disappeared in the spring of the following year. He was last seen at a fuel depot owned by Maniek in the town of Czeladź. Polish investigators suspect he is dead.
