Bitcoin Pulls Back to $78K–$79K — Oversold Bounce Loading or Deeper Correction?

Bitcoin is back below $80,000 — and the reason matters more than the number. Bitcoin slipped to $79,049 on Saturday after exhibiting strong bullish momentum earlier in the week.

Market analysts attribute the dip to the latest U.S. producer price inflation data — accelerating to 6.

This sparked renewed concerns about the Federal Reserve’s rate trajectory and prompted brief profit-taking across risk assets.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their largest weekly outflow in months — a net $1 billion for the week ending May 15.

That reversed a six-week inflow streak. On the final trading day alone, all 11 ETFs logged $290.42 million in net outflows. Not a single fund posted a positive flow.

What Triggered the Pullback?

The 6% producer price inflation reading arrived faster than markets anticipated. It raises the probability that the Fed — now led by incoming chair Kevin Warsh — delays rate cuts further.

Tighter-for-longer monetary policy is not a friend to risk assets. Some participants point to profit-taking after the strong April run.

Others cite macro headwinds including the inflation print and upcoming Federal Reserve commentary.

Ethereum ETFs also saw $255.11 million in outflows this week — adding to a sense of sector-wide caution.

The ETF reversal is worth watching carefully. The $1 billion weekly exit is the largest since late January.

It echoes earlier dips seen in March and February 2026, when weekly red figures also topped several hundred million dollars before inflows resumed. History says this is not unusual. It does not make it comfortable.

What the Charts Are Telling Us

BTCUSD (Weekly): As of May 16, 2026 (17:40 UTC), Bitcoin trades at $78,251.63, down -1.02% on the week. The MACD histogram at +2,200.18 is positive and still growing — the bullish momentum from the April recovery has not reversed.

ONDO’s correction is gaining traction after its rejection at the $0.47 supply zone, with price now drifting toward the Fibonacci golden zone between $0.28 and $0.32.

The move hasn’t been chaotic—it’s been controlled, which often signals a structured pullback rather than a full breakdown.

At the time of writing, the token was hovering around $0.3455, placing it right in the middle of this transition.
The $0.28–$0.32 range now stands out as the most important level on the chart. This zone often acts as a decision point in trending markets, where corrections either find support and reverse or lose structure entirely.

What keeps the bullish case alive, at least for now, is the fact that ONDO is still trading above key EMA supports. That suggests the broader trend has not flipped bearish despite the market cooling off after an extended move.

But that alone won’t be enough for an investor to make moves. Buyers need to show up with conviction at the golden zone for a meaningful reversal to take shape.

He also mentioned that the integration of the US FIPS 203–206 standards into the Cardano ecosystem is planned, aiming to strengthen private key security, transaction signatures, and consensus mechanisms.

While Hoskinson’s statements caused a stir in the crypto community, Adam Back took a more cautious approach. In a post on social media platform X, Back stated, “Don’t listen to altcoin promoters. Bitcoin researchers are handling this. Altcoins mostly copy Bitcoin’s cryptographic libraries anyway, so they will most likely follow Bitcoin’s path.

Brian Armstrong thinks the US government is sitting on a future trillion-dollar Bitcoin pile. The Coinbase CEO has been making the case that America’s existing Bitcoin holdings, combined with proposed federal purchases, could push the nation’s reserves past the $1 trillion mark.

The US federal government is already the largest known state holder of Bitcoin, with an estimated 328,372 $BTC as of February 2026.

From seized coins to strategic asset

Here’s the thing about the government’s Bitcoin: most of it wasn’t bought. It was seized. Think Silk Road busts, ransomware takedowns, and various federal forfeiture actions. For years, the standard playbook was to auction that Bitcoin off as quickly as possible.

That changed in March 2025, when President Trump signed an executive order establishing a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The order directed the government to stop selling its forfeited Bitcoin and instead consolidate it into a permanent reserve.

The BITCOIN Act and the path to 1 million $BTC

Armstrong’s trillion-dollar projection doesn’t rely solely on what the government already owns. It leans heavily on Senator Cynthia Lummis’s proposed legislation, known as the BITCOIN Act.

Lummis first introduced the bill on July 31, 2024, proposing that the US purchase 1 million $BTC over five years. She re-introduced it on March 11, 2025, this time with co-sponsorship from five senators. The bill envisions funding those purchases through diversification of existing federal funds, not new spending.

The G20 domino effect

Armstrong claims other G20 nations are now examining Bitcoin reserves following America’s announcement.
