U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael S. Selig said on May 12 that the agency is working with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on regulatory oversight, rulemaking, and enforcement alignment across increasingly connected financial markets. Speaking at the FINRA 2026 Annual Conference in Washington, Selig also highlighted participation in the SEC’s Project Crypto and work on a crypto asset taxonomy aimed at improving regulatory clarity
As securities and derivatives activity increasingly intersect, regulators face pressure to reduce gaps between their rulebooks. Selig noted the CFTC and SEC have taken several steps toward more unified oversight where their jurisdictions meet. Those efforts include a memorandum of understanding, a joint harmonization initiative, and expected joint requests for comment tied to portfolio margining and swap data reporting.

Regulators are also working to better align CFTC swap reporting requirements with SEC Regulation SBSR, the framework governing security-based swap reporting. Much of the coordination effort spans broader securities and derivatives oversight, although crypto policy initiatives featured prominently in the discussion. Selig detailed:

Although the Bitcoin network has seen a sharp uptick in activity, major events in the United States amid a leveraged-driven rally remain a major concern. For instance, U.S. inflation came in hotter than expected, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) surging to 3.8%, its highest level since May 2023, a factor that is considered bearish for crypto assets.

In addition, the upcoming markup vote for the Clarity Act, a proposed U.S. federal regulation aimed at legalizing crypto assets, could trigger a sell-the-news scenario for Bitcoin. Compounding this, the $BTC price has faced a significant sell wall around $82,200 over the past few days and was trading at about $80,170 at press time.





As such, if the network’s activity continues to grow, it may bolster near-term growth, as Finbold previously noted. On the other hand, if $BTC’s network falls over the coming days, further correction, fueled by macroeconomic events, could be inevitable.

Readings between 50 and 80 generally indicate healthy bullish momentum, while readings between 20 and 50 point to weaker or bearish conditions.

The MFI has now moved well above the 80 level, indicating that $CRO may be overvalued in the short term. This raises the possibility that buying momentum could weaken, potentially leading to a pullback if traders begin taking profits more aggressively.
