Bitcoin ($BTC) mining and artificial intelligence (AI) computing both consume massive amounts of electricity, sparking an intense debate over their environmental impact in 2026. Bitcoin, the pioneering cryptocurrency, secures its decentralized network through energy-intensive proof-of-work mining that consumes 150-170 TWh yearly and emits 65-75 million tonnes (Mt) of CO₂e.

Meanwhile, AI computing powers everything from large language models like GPT, image generators, and recommendation systems in massive GPU data centers, already producing 33-80 million tonnes of CO₂e. Both technologies consume vast amounts of electricity amid the global net-zero push, forcing urgent questions about which leaves the larger carbon footprint

A Russian stablecoin built to dodge sanctions says it can survive even if they're liftedEarlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia is "getting very close," with Kyiv and Moscow apparently nearing some sort of deal.

For A7A5 — a ruble-pegged stablecoin designed to bypass the sanctions imposed on Russia following the 2022 invasion of its neighbor — any resultant easing of those measures raises an existential question: What happens when the conditions that created your market disappear?

According to Oleg Ogienko, an executive at the stablecoin, the business survives. Like its dollar and euro-pegged equivalents, the ruble token provides faster, cheaper international settlement than traditional banking payments, he said, and, like them, will find wider applications as international commerce opens up.

“Our stablecoin has a good chance to stay competitive even after the sanctions are lifted,” Ogienko told CoinDesk in Hong Kong. “If you trade with Russia, you need convenient and fast means of settlement.”

While stablecoins account for just a fraction of global payments, their popularity is growing, and they are likely to become a core layer of global finance, Chainalysis said in an April report. International business-to-business stablecoin transactions are projected to reach $13.4 billion this year, according to Juniper Research, and climb to $5 trillion by 2035.

One possible use might be paying for Russian oil. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the U.S.-Iran war fueled a surge in demand for oil from the world's third-largest producer. The country accounts for 11% of global production, surpassed only by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The filings came as asset managers continue to test how far the SEC may move beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum products. VanEck filed Amendment No. 5 for the VanEck BNB ETF on May 15. The fund is expected to list on Nasdaq under the ticker VBNB, subject to approval. Its filing says the trust would hold BNB directly and trade under Nasdaq’s commodity-based trust share rules. The filing says the trust would seek to reflect the value of BNB held by the fund, less expenses and liabilities. It also includes conditional language around staking, but that does not mean staking will be active at launch. That part remains tied to regulatory and operational conditions. In addition, the BNB filings show caution around staking. Both proposals focus on direct BNB exposure, while keeping staking outside the main launch plan. That approach reflects ongoing questions around how staking rewards fit inside regulated U.S. ETF products. Canary Capital is taking a different path with its Canary Staked TRX ETF. Over the past week, institutional demand for Ethereum appears to have slowed significantly, as no influx of fresh capital was recorded on any day of the week.

Data provided by SosoValue shows that the Ethereum ETFs have recorded a total weekly outflow of $65.65 million, marking the highest weekly withdrawal recorded since January.

While the last week has proven to be the poorest week the Ethereum ETFs have witnessed since January, the asset saw mixed price action.

This suggests that the brief rally seen on some days of the week might have been driven by market hype or sentiment and not demand from investors, especially institutions.

Nonetheless, the extended withdrawals seen on all days of the week suggest that institutional investors are taking caution and are hesitating to lock their funds in the Ethereum-based investment product.

The highest outflow was seen on Tuesday, May 12, when the funds recorded a total of $130.62 million in outflows within 24 hours, as market sentiment turned negative.

Apparently, it appeared that the brief price rallies witnessed on some of the days could not drive institutional interest in Ethereum, causing the steady withdrawals seen throughout the week.

BlackRock has not only established its leadership in the Bitcoin ETF market, but also in the Ethereum ETF ecosystem as ETHA, its Ethereum ETF, accounted for the highest outflow recorded on each day of the week.

Although the broader momentum is weak and no inflow was seen throughout the week, BlackRock still positions itself as a key player in the Ethereum ETF market.
