A three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, brokered with US backing, has opened the door to something markets haven’t priced in for years: the possibility that this war might actually wind down. President Trump said he believes the truce could last longer than its initial window, and crypto markets appear to agree with him, at least for now.

Bitcoin pushed past $80,000 following the announcement, a move traders attributed directly to the perceived cooling of one of the world’s most destabilizing geopolitical conflicts.

The truce covers May 9 through May 11, a narrow window that both sides have already tested with mutual accusations of violations. Alongside the pause in fighting, the deal includes a planned 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, which would represent one of the largest swaps since the conflict escalated.

Discussions between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have apparently included the possibility of extending the ceasefire beyond its initial three days, with a potential longer-term arrangement floated for as late as June 30. Prediction markets have pegged the odds of that extension at roughly 9.5%.

The Russia-Ukraine war has been a background variable in crypto markets since February 2022. During the initial stages of the conflict, Ukraine raised over $225 million in crypto donations for defense, while Russia’s strategies to circumvent sanctions included increased use of Bitcoin and stablecoins.

On the demand side, reduced conflict could lessen the premium investors place on non-sovereign stores of value. But the immediate market reaction, Bitcoin reclaiming $80,000, suggests traders are reading the ceasefire as net positive rather than a reason to rotate out.

A federal court has ruled that President Trump’s 10% tariff on most imports entering the United States is unlawful. The Court of International Trade, in a 2-1 decision, found that the administration failed to demonstrate the kind of balance-of-payments crisis needed to justify the levies.

For crypto, the ruling matters more than you might think. US-based Bitcoin miners have been eating inflated hardware costs for years thanks to tariffs on imported ASIC machines, and a potential rollback could meaningfully change their cost structure.

The 53-page ruling hinged on a technical but important distinction. The Trump administration had invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act to impose tariffs, arguing that trade deficits and current account deficits qualified as the “balance-of-payments deficits” the statute requires.

The court disagreed. The law allows emergency tariffs on imports when the country is running out of foreign currency reserves to pay its international bills. A trade deficit, where you import more goods than you export, is not the same thing. The judges found no such payments crisis existed.

The ruling grants injunctions and refunds, but only to a narrow set of plaintiffs: the state of Washington, a spice company called Burlap and Barrel, and a small toy business. Broader claims brought by other states were dismissed for lack of standing, meaning the decision avoids becoming a universal injunction that would block the tariffs for everyone.

This is the second time courts have knocked down Trump’s tariff framework. The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling earlier in 2026 that blocked tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Now Section 122 has also been rejected.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange starting Saturday, May 9. President Donald Trump announced the deal on May 8 via Truth Social, stating that all “kinetic activity” would be suspended through May 11.

Both sides confirmed the agreement independently. Previous ceasefire attempts during the conflict have collapsed before they could take hold, making mutual confirmation something close to a minor diplomatic event.

What the deal actually includes
The ceasefire covers three full days, from May 9 through May 11. The timing is deliberate: May 9 is Victory Day in Russia, the annual commemoration of the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II.

Alongside the pause in fighting, both nations agreed to a prisoner swap involving 1,000 prisoners from each side, totaling 2,000 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the “1,000 for 1,000” framework and said he had instructed his team to begin preparations.

On the Russian side, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov referenced the “acceptability of the initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.” Zelenskyy stated that a “ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11.”

What this means for crypto markets
Major crypto news outlets had not covered the ceasefire as of May 9, and there were no identifiable price movements in Bitcoin or Ethereum tied to the announcement.

When Russia first invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Bitcoin initially dropped before rallying as Ukrainian citizens turned to crypto for cross-border transfers and donations. A three-day ceasefire is not a peace treaty, and traders appear to be pricing this accordingly. The scenario that would move markets is a broader, sustained ceasefire or a formal peace negotiation framework, which would have implications for energy prices, European economic stability, and global risk appetite.

The gap between the two assets is not random. It is being built by the most significant category of market participant in the current cycle.

The report examines Fund Holdings — the total amount of Bitcoin and Ethereum held by institutional investment vehicles, including ETFs, trusts, and dedicated funds. The metric functions as a direct proxy for institutional demand: when fund holdings rise, institutions are adding exposure. When they fall, institutions are reducing it.

Since early February, the data has been telling two very different stories for the two largest crypto assets. Bitcoin fund holdings increased from approximately 1.278 million BTC to 1.370 million BTC — a net accumulation of more than 92,000 BTC, representing 7.2% growth in institutional exposure during a period when the market was recovering from its lows. Over the same period, Ethereum fund holdings moved in the opposite direction — declining from 5.93 million ETH to 5.80 million ETH, a reduction of approximately 127,000 ETH.

The two assets, the same time period, the same category of participant, and opposite decisions. Understanding why that divergence exists and what it means for both assets going forward is where the report’s most significant analytical contribution lies.
