Bitcoin’s Tug of War at $75K Leaves Traders Bruised; Analyst Eyes $85K by Late Bitcoin has experienced significant volatility over the last 24 hours, repeatedly testing the $75,000 resistance level before settling near $74,200.Bitcoin repeatedly tested $75,000 on April 16, resulting in $137 million in total trader liquidations.Coinglass data shows 8,061 traders were liquidated as BTC price volatility exceeded 2.94% in 24 hours.

Geopolitical and Economic Drivers
Bitcoin breached the $75,000 mark several times in the last 24 hours as the cryptocurrency continued to hold on to gains initially made on April 13. As shown on the daily chart, bitcoin twice surpassed the mark on Wednesday evening, but its momentum stalled each time amid a wave of selling pressure.
However, a few hours before midnight, the top cryptocurrency breached the mark again before retreating slightly to consolidate near the threshold. By 5 a.m. EST, a fresh volatile session commenced as the price plunged to $74,300, only for the cryptocurrency to rally back to $75,000. The same price action repeated between 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., but this time, bitcoin plummeted to an intraday low of $73,309 before a quick surge saw it nearly tap the $75,000 resistance again.

Will Markets Break Resistance When $2B Crypto Options Expire Today?

Around 22,200 Bitcoin options contracts will expire on Friday, April 17, with a notional value of roughly $1.66 billion. This event is a little smaller than last week’s expiry, so it is unlikely to have any impact on spot markets.

Crypto prices have been climbing slowly this week, with around $150 billion being added to total capitalization since Monday.

Bitcoin Options Expiry

This week’s batch of Bitcoin options contracts has a put/call ratio of 1, meaning that sellers of longs and shorts are evenly matched. Max pain is around $71,000, according to Coinglass, which is a little lower than current spot prices, so some could be out of the money on expiry.

Open interest (OI), or the value or number of Bitcoin options contracts yet to expire, remains highest at the $80,000 strike price on Deribit, with $1.5 billion as bullish bets take over, but bears still have $1.4 billion in OI at $60,000.

Total $BTC options OI across all exchanges has been steadily climbing this month and is at $35.6 billion, according to Coinglass.
