CFTC Engages with Major Sports Leagues on Predictive Market Regulation Cooperation
05/12 16:10
On May 12, Michael Selig, chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), stated that the regulatory agency is in discussions with all major U.S. professional sports leagues to strengthen the regulatory framework for sports-related predictive markets and to prevent insider trading and market manipulation risks. Selig revealed at the FINRA annual meeting in Washington that the CFTC had previously signed a memorandum of understanding for information sharing with Major League Baseball, marking its first formal data collaboration mechanism with a professional sports league. This initiative comes as predictive market platforms, such as Kalshi and Polymarket, continue to expand their sports contract offerings, raising legal disputes between state-level gambling regulators and federal regulatory authority.
