The U.K. government announced on Aug. 18 that a London court had wound up Key Coin Assets Ltd. a week earlier. An investigation by the Insolvency Service, the U.K. government agency that investigates corporate misconduct and insolvency, found no evidence that the company carried out any of the crypto trading it advertised.

Nine people who took their complaints to Action Fraud, the U.K.’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting center, paid the company more than £300,000 between them.

Unauthorized investment schemes remain a live risk for U.K. savers, with Britain’s full crypto authorization regime still more than a year away. The company told investors it could guarantee returns ranging from 40% to 100%, while one online promotion claimed “0 Fees, 0 Risks.”

Insolvency Service Chief Investigator Mark George said:

“Key Coin Assets Ltd promised guaranteed returns but delivered nothing. Their behavior displayed all the hallmarks of a Ponzi-style scheme.”

Money from newer investors appeared to have gone toward paying off earlier ones rather than into any investment, the Insolvency Service noted.

Bank records examined by investigators showed customer funds were often transferred into the company director’s personal account within hours or on the same day they arrived. The money then became difficult to trace, while accounting records requested by the Insolvency Service were not provided during the investigation.

The company repeatedly changed its official address, at one point listing a flat whose occupants had never heard of the firm. Filings at Companies House claimed assets reaching £42 million, a figure investigators found far above the level suggested by the company’s actual banking activity.

Ether (EHT) has outperformed bitcoin $BTC$77,451.96 over two months and the trend looks set to continue, with a “golden cross” having recently formed on the $ETH/$BTC ratio.

The crossover is identified when an asset's rolling 50-day average price surpasses its 200-day average. It's said to reflect a short-term trend outperforming the longer-term trajectory, with the potential to evolve into a full-blown bull run.

The latest crossover in the $ETH/$BTC ratio suggests just that. Its appearance comes after an already buoyant stretch for ether, which has been outperforming bitcoin since early June. The pair has rallied 25% since the June 6 bottom.

Crossovers, however, are built entirely from past price action, not a forward-looking read on what comes next. Think of them as a thermometer: it tells us the market's present temperature, not tomorrow's forecast. The logic underneath a golden cross leans on a simple assumption, that an object in motion stays in motion until an outside forces acts upon it, meaning if the averages are rising, the trend is up, the momentum should persist. That assumption doesn't always hold, which is why these signals are not always reliable and have well-documented limits.

Golden crosses have a mixed record on the $ETH/$BTC ratio specifically, some have paid off, others have failed, trapping bulls on the wrong side of the market.

The most recent one, on July 25, 2025, initially delivered. The ratio rallied 36% over the following four weeks before reversing into a much steeper downtrend. The February 2021 golden cross fared remarkably better, fueling a 93% rally that took the ratio to 0.0824 by mid-May 2021. But the crosses that appeared in May 2022 and August 2022 turned out to be bull traps, with the ratio falling almost

Upbit lists Lighter’s LIT in South Korean won market
Upbit will add a South Korean won trading market for Lighter’s $LIT token at 1:00 pm KST on Aug. 24, according to an official exchange announcement.

The $LIT/KRW listing will allow Upbit customers to purchase the token directly with won. $LIT was already available through Upbit’s Bitcoin market, which provided the reference price used to establish the new market’s opening restrictions.

Upbit listed $LIT’s previous $BTC market closing price as 0.00004500 $BTC, equivalent to approximately 4,803 won. The figure is a reference for initial order controls and does not guarantee the token’s opening price in the won market.

The exchange warned that trading could be postponed if it fails to secure sufficient liquidity after deposits and withdrawals become available.

On Aug. 19, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an increase to the size of the Treasury's bond buyback program, raising the maximum per-operation amount for 10-, 20-, and 30-year bond repurchases to at least $4 billion, up from the previous $2 billion limit. The move coincided with longer-duration yields hovering at their highest levels since 2007, a challenge for both fiscal management and risk assets broadly.

The market reaction was immediate, and it showed up almost entirely in hard assets, not bonds. Bitcoin surged to nearly $80,000, with the broader crypto market, triggering billions of dollars in short-position liquidations. Gold rallied too.

Analysts said the announcement made clear how uneasy officials are about rising long-duration borrowing costs, and it fed hopes that a more aggressive liquidity-easing operation could follow. Hard assets, naturally, benefited from that expectation.

"Bitcoin's move reflects an alignment of macro and policy catalysts. The Treasury's decision to double its buybacks of long-dated government debt is aimed at calming the bond market and providing liquidity at the long end of the curve, where borrowing costs have been rising on concerns over U.S. debt levels and inflation,” Fabian Dori, chief investment officer at Sygnum, said in an email.

“This is not money printing, the mechanism sits with the Treasury rather than the central bank balance sheet, but the signal matters: managing the cost of US debt has become an active policy priority, and that reignites the currency debasement narrative. It is telling that gold and silver rallied alongside bitcoin, with capital rotating into scarce, non-sovereign stores of value," Dori added.
