FalconX asks SEC to bring single-stock perpetuals from DeFi under swap rulesFalconX Bravo wants US regulators to treat cash-settled perpetuals tied to a single security or a narrow-based security index as security-based swaps under SEC rules when they fall outside the joint SEC-CFTC security-futures framework.

The filing expressly includes comparable contracts offered through DeFi protocols.

The firm submitted its proposal to the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Aug. 12. FalconX Bravo is listed on the CFTC’s registered swap dealer roster and describes its business as focused on digital assets and digital asset market participants.

FalconX’s definition covers the specified perpetuals and options on them. It does not extend to Bitcoin perpetuals or crypto perpetuals generally.

A qualifying contract listed as a security futures product on a market authorized by both agencies stays in the joint regime. That route carries listing and market safeguards covering the underlying security or index, clearing, margin, position limits, surveillance, and trading halts.

FalconX examples include bilateral and over-the-counter transactions, contracts offered by eligible venues or platforms authorized for security-based swaps, non-US venues, and comparable DeFi protocols.

For affected dealers, SEC treatment can trigger registration, business-conduct, transaction-reporting, capital, margin, and segregation requirements. A platform may also come within the security-based swap execution framework, depending on its structure and any applicable execution or clearing mandate.

Dealer status and other duties depend on the participant and transaction, so classification would not automatically require every protocol developer or trader to register.

In recently published research, aptly called “Do You Even Crypto, Bro? Crypto rally spills into dog and cat memecoins as smaller tokens double in a week



Crypto’s latest rally is spreading into the market’s more speculative corners, with dog and cat-themed memecoins posting some of the biggest gains as traders move further out on the risk curve.

Robinhood-based Cash Cat led the move Tuesday, jumping about 51% over 24 hours to $0.218 and more than 113% over the past week. The token has gained about 345% over 30 days, taking its market value to roughly $215 million.

Other cat-themed tokens have joined the chase. Thinking Cat has surged 131% over seven days, Purr is up 93%, Popcat has jumped 54% and cat in a dogs world, or MEW, has climbed 49%.

The same pattern is showing up among dog coins. Dog (Bitcoin) has nearly doubled over the past week, while dogwifhat has climbed 64%, Bonk 47% and Floki 40%.

Even the largest memecoins are participating, though with smaller gains. Dogecoin is up about 32% over the past seven days and Shiba Inu about 30%.

Memecoins are cryptocurrencies built largely around internet jokes or communities rather than a traditional business or cash flow. Their prices tend to react strongly when traders become more willing to take risk, making the smaller tokens a useful gauge of speculative appetite.

The latest moves suggest some of the gains that began in larger cryptocurrencies are now reaching tokens further down the market-cap rankings, where thinner liquidity can produce much larger percentage swings.

Cash Cat is a good example. About $80 million of the token traded over the past 24 hours against a market value of roughly $215 million — or unusually heavy turnover for a coin of its size.

That can work both ways, however. Smaller memecoins can rise much faster when buyers pile in, but the same lack of depth can magnify losses when traders head for the exits.

With the resurgence of trading activity in the cryptocurrency markets, trading volumes on centralized exchanges have increased significantly in a short period. Daily trading volume, which doubled in five days last week, has recovered from its annual lows and surpassed $37 billion. However, despite this increase, volume remains well below the 12-month peak of $105 billion seen after the large liquidations on October 10th.

Total trading volume in August also reflects the recovery in market activity. According to the data, approximately $490 billion worth of transactions took place on centralized exchanges in the first part of the month. In July, this figure was $670 billion.

Analysts point out that in the current cycle, spot CEX volumes are having to compete with spot crypto ETFs, unlike in previous periods. While in the past, a large portion of investor demand was met directly through centralized exchanges, with the proliferation of ETF products, some of the capital for major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum is shifting towards traditional financial channels.

It is noted that the proliferation of crypto ETFs and digital asset treasury companies (DATs) could put long-term pressure on centralized exchange volumes. Conversely, demand in the altcoin market is expected to remain largely on CEX platforms. Fast listing, a wide range of trading pairs, and advanced trading tools for small market cap tokens are among the advantages that ETF and DAT structures cannot easily offer.
