UK Banks Still Blocking Bitcoin, Policy Group Tells Parliament



Bitcoin Policy UK has slammed British banks for applying blanket restrictions to lawful bitcoin activity.

The organization said in an announcement Friday that it had submitted evidence to the Crypto and Digital Assets APPG’s parliamentary inquiry into banking access, revealing that no improvements had been made over the past three years in how banks treat bitcoin activity.

The issue: UK policy treats “crypto” as one thing, so bitcoin is caught by rules written for unbacked tokens and issuer-dependent stablecoins.

The British government has said since 2023 that banks should assess case by case rather than restrict by sector. The group says practice has not followed, and that the gap is widening as the UK moves toward full implementation of its cryptoasset regime in 2027.

$BNB Smart Chain (BSC) activated its Pasteur hard fork on Tuesday, closing bridge verification and validator authorization gaps while introducing a new route intended to fit more transactions into each block.

In a Tuesday post, $BNB Chain confirmed that Pasteur was live on the BSC mainnet. The team said the upgrade strengthens the network’s bridge, staking and governance security while giving blocks more capacity without changing its 450-millisecond block time.

The upgrade combines three $BNB Evolution Proposals. BEP-682 rejects duplicate validator entries during cross-chain light-block verification, while BEP-695 tightens controls involving validator key rotation, slashing and governance voting. Furthermore, BEP-675 changes how specialist builders submit blocks to validators.

The upgrade prevents validators from being counted more than once in bridge approvals, removes authority from old validator keys and blocks restricted addresses from voting, while aiming to fit more transactions into blocks during busy periods.

Pasteur targets fuller blocks

Under BSC’s previous block-building route, a builder executed transactions before submitting a proposed block, and the validator executed them again before signing it. $BNB Chain said the repeated work took time away from builders operating within the network’s 450-millisecond block window, sometimes leaving blocks underfilled.

BEP-675 allows builders to submit blocks they have already executed. Validators check the proposed block against consensus rules, sign and broadcast it, then complete full execution verification afterward. Builders can also continue using the previous route, under which validators execute transactions before signing.

Solana led the majors, up almost 8% to just above $101 and almost 35% over seven days. Ether added over 2% to just under $2,500 and is up almost 32% on the week. BNB rose over 2% to just under $714. XRP gained almost 2% to just above $1.50 and leads all majors on the week at over 52%.

Solana's gains come as validators vote on two proposals that would cut SOL's supply, as CoinDesk reported, one slowing new issuance and one raising daily burns to as much as $800,000. Voting closes Thursday.

Zcash extended its run, up over 1% to $846 and 66% on the week, the strongest weekly performance among the top dozen tokens. Dogecoin edged up to 9 cents for a 32% weekly gain, and tron rose half a percent to just under 35 cents, the only major without a double-digit week at 4%.

Hyperliquid's HYPE was the sole decliner, off marginally at $81, though it holds a 36% weekly gain.

The rally traces to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's plan to step up bond repurchases, which revived talk of the debasement trade, the idea that holding assets outside government control protects against a currency losing value.

Bessent added nothing further on Monday, saying the department will continue its regular programme of sales and signalling no changes before the next quarterly

Rising federal interest costs could intensify financial-market pressure without an economic downturn or new emergency, Devere Group CEO Nigel Green warned on Aug. 24. He argued that borrowing required to finance existing interest expenses creates larger future obligations as older, lower-cost debt matures and is refinanced at higher rates.

Green explained:

“This is arithmetic, not sentiment. Interest is compounding faster than the economy generating the revenue to pay it, so every dollar borrowed to cover last year’s interest bill creates a larger interest bill this year, regardless of who sits in the White House or what the Federal Reserve decides next.”

Official Treasury figures show that total public debt outstanding stood at approximately $40.03 trillion on Aug. 20. About $32.28 trillion was held by the public, including investors and institutions, while approximately $7.75 trillion represented intragovernmental holdings involving federal accounts and trust funds.

The federal outlook has worsened since the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) published its February baseline. The agency now estimates a $2.1 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026, $200 billion above the $1.9 trillion projected on Feb. 11, after cutting its revenue estimate on weaker tariff collections.

CBO said on Aug. 20 that trade policy changes through July 31 add another $0.9 trillion to projected deficits across 2027 through 2036. Its February baseline had debt held by the public rising from 101% of gross domestic product this year to 120% by 2036, with the annual deficit reaching $3.1 trillion — figures the agency has not yet restated.

In a June 11 report, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) projected that debt held by the public will reach 123% of GDP in 2036 and 251% by 2056 under current revenue and spending policies.
