Coinbase reported a net loss of $394 million for the first quarter of 2026, swinging from a $65.6 million profit in the same period last year and missing Wall Street expectations on both revenue and earnings per share — as a sharp pullback in crypto prices and trading volumes hit the exchange’s core business harder than analysts had anticipated.

The results, reported by Bloomberg after market close on May 7, showed total revenue of $1.41 billion — a 30.5% year-over-year decline and a miss against the analyst consensus of approximately $1.51 billion. On a per-share basis, Coinbase posted a GAAP loss of $1.49 against expectations of a $0.29 profit — a significant miss that sent shares down roughly 4% in after-hours trading.

What Drove Coinbase To A Loss
The single largest drag on the quarter was $482 million in unrealized losses on crypto assets held for investment, tied primarily to Bitcoin’s roughly 23% decline during Q1, a separate report from TheStreet crypto claims. Strip out that mark-to-market impact and the adjusted net loss narrows to $46 million — a meaningful distinction, but one that still reflects a materially weaker operating environment than the prior year.

Transaction revenue, the exchange’s primary revenue engine, came in at $755.8 million — down 23% quarter-over-quarter and below the $805.2 million analysts had projected. The main driver was straightforward: total crypto market capitalization and spot trading volumes declined more than 20% quarter-over-quarter, per Investing.com, pulling Coinbase’s most volatile revenue line with it.

Krueger argues that this strengthens the possibility of a second person managing the “Satoshi desk.”

The second pillar of the theory is based on technical expertise. Krueger stated that Hal Finney was a highly skilled C++ developer capable of developing Bitcoin’s infrastructure, but early doubts about Hashcash suggested that the cryptographic vision in the Bitcoin whitepaper might have come from someone else. Len Sassaman’s status as a top-tier cryptography expert is noteworthy in this context.

Language use was also cited as a supporting element for the theory. Noting that Len Sassaman lived in Belgium, Krueger argued that the use of British English expressions like “favour” and “colour” in Satoshi Nakamoto’s writings was closer to Sassaman’s language style. This, it was suggested, could explain details that don’t align with Hal Finney’s American English style.

The crypto industry’s embrace of AI is less about chatbots and more about building financial infrastructure for autonomous machines, says Chappy Asel, a former Apple engineer and founder of AI nonprofit The AI Collective.

Speaking at Consensus Miami, Asel, founder of The AI Collective, a global nonprofit AI community with more than 200,000 members across 150+ chapters, argued that as software agents increasingly make economic decisions on behalf of users and businesses, they will need payment systems capable of handling low-latency, programmable transactions at scale.

“When agents make the majority of financial decisions, economic decisions, how do they transact with each other?” Asel said during the panel. “You want them to be highly systematic, mechanistic. You want very small, micro transactions. You want very low latency.”

Asel, who previously worked on Apple’s Vision Pro and early Apple Intelligence efforts before launching The AI Collective, framed the convergence of crypto and AI through a practical lens.

“The number one thing that I've heard kind of throughout this conference... even my friends who only know about AI, they know nothing about blockchain, is they've heard about agentic payments,” he said.

Stablecoins already offer 24/7 settlement and smart contracts allow programmable execution. Marrying them together is the only logical way agentic payments — without a human in the middle — can become mainstream.

Still, the thesis remains early. AI agents are still nascent, and many companies today rely on centralized APIs and conventional payment systems. Attempts to build “agentic payments” infrastructure have so far generated little meaningful commercial activity, suggesting the narrative may be developing faster than actual demand.
