Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz has defended an old XRP price discussion that has returned to attention on X.  Summary David Schwartz defended his 2017 XRP comments after fresh criticism from the crypto community. Schwartz said the old XRP post explained liquidity needs, not a future price target. His deleted Arbitrum posts added more attention to his recent explanations on X. The exchange followed criticism from a user who accused him of misleading the XRP community. The debate centered on a 2017 thread in which Schwartz discussed XRP liquidity and price levels. He said the comments were not meant to serve as an XRP price prediction. In the 2017 post, Schwartz argued that XRP could not be “dirt cheap” if it handled large global transaction volumes. He used a simple example to explain how liquidity needs could relate to transaction size. That doesn’t make any sense.” He added that if XRP traded at $1, a user would need one million XRP to move $1 million. If XRP traded at $1 million, one XRP would move the same value. Ripple veteran rejects price prediction claims Schwartz said many users have taken the post as a promise of future XRP value. He pushed back on that reading and said the thread explained market mechanics, not a guaranteed price target. He said, “I think it’s very simple.” He added that some people still treat the post as proof that XRP was designed to have a high price. Schwartz said deleting the old thread could remove useful context and create more confusion. Three Bank of Japan members call for a rate hike; yen rises while bitcoin falls
The Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) monetary policy decision on Tuesday boosted expectations of a hike in borrowing costs by the end of the second quarter. The yen is loving it, while bitcoin remains under pressure.

The central bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 0.75% as widely expected. The decision, however, wasn't unanimous, as three board members wanted to hike rates today itself.

The 6–3 vote split is the largest since Kazuo Ueda became governor of the central bank, indicating that more policymakers are now pushing to raise borrowing costs.

Markets price June rate hike

The central bank also raised its forecast for core inflation to 2.8% for this fiscal year, while revising economic growth projections lower to 0.5% from 1%. The rationale behind the BoJ’s hawkish tilt is largely tied to war-related disruptions in energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, which have pushed up global energy prices and fed into inflationary pressures across energy-import-dependent economies like Japan.

Traders immediately priced in a 74% chance of a rate hike on June 16. That aligns with the consensus among Bank of Japan watchers, who had widely expected a June hike ahead of the decision, according to Bloomberg News.

Yen jumps: Another carry unwind shock ahead?

The Japanese yen rose, pushing the dollar-yen (USD/JPY) pair down nearly 0.5% to 158.95 (For major currencies, that’s a notable move). Rate hikes, or expectations of them, typically support a country’s currency, in this case, the yen.

The bitcoin-yen pair (BTC/JPY) listed on bitFlyer fell by 0.6% to 12.28 million yen, consistent with the weakness in the dollar-denominated prices, according to data source TradingView.

Circle Ventures snaps up $AAVE days after a $293M KelpDAO exploit, shoring up Aave’s bad‑debt shock while Washington weighs a landmark US stablecoin bill.

Aave governance is bracing for another high‑stakes vote as a proposal to pause $AAVE buybacks until the rsETH/KelpDAO incident is fully resolved goes live on April 28, extending a de facto halt already in place since April 19. The ARFC, posted on the Aave governance forum, argues that diverting protocol revenue into buybacks while the size and allocation of rsETH losses remain uncertain “would reduce the treasury’s capacity to participate in a coordinated response should one become necessary.”

The proposal formalizes the current stop on treasury buybacks that followed the April 18 rsETH bridge exploit, where unbacked rsETH surged into Aave V3 markets and forced the Aave Guardian to freeze rsETH and wrsETH reserves across multiple chains. “All Aave pools remain safe and fully operational,” the Guardian stressed in an incident note, adding that the issue “does not stem from a vulnerability in the Aave protocol itself” but from KelpDAO and LayerZero infrastructure.

Governance under pressure in a $620M hack month

According to incident trackers and security firms, the April 2026 DeFi hack wave has already drained more than $620 million across a dozen exploits, led by KelpDAO’s roughly $292–$293 million bridge attack that siphoned 116,500 rsETH — about 18% of supply — in a single transaction. Aave has been one of the hardest‑hit venues in second‑order effects, with analytics site CryptoRank reporting that its total value locked fell from around $26.4 billion to $18.6 billion after the KelpDAO incident, wiping out close to $8 billion in deposits.
