'Back to work': Michael Saylor's Strategy buys 535 bitcoin for $43 million after brief pause as total holdings hit 818,869 BTC
Strategy has purchased another 535 BTC for approximately $43 million at an average price of $80,340 per bitcoin, bringing its total holdings to 818,869 BTC.

The latest acquisitions were funded by proceeds from the issuance and sale of the company’s Class A common stock, MSTR, and perpetual preferred stock, STRC.

Bitcoin treasury company Strategy acquired an additional 535 BTC for approximately $43 million at an average price of $80,340 per bitcoin between May 4 and May 10, according to an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

Strategy now holds a total of 818,869 BTC — worth around $66.5 billion — bought at an average price of $75,540 per bitcoin for a total cost of around $61.9 billion, including fees and expenses, according to the company's co-founder and executive chairman, Michael Saylor.

Notably, Strategy's holdings are the equivalent of more than 3.9% of bitcoin's 21 million supply cap and imply around $4.6 billion of paper gains at current prices.

The latest acquisitions were made using proceeds from at-the-market sales of its Class A common stock, MSTR, and perpetual Stretch preferred stock, STRC. Last week, Strategy sold 231,324 MSTR shares for approximately $42.9 million. As of May 10, $26.35 billion worth of MSTR shares remain available for issuance and sale under that program, the firm said. Strategy also sold 1,412 STRC shares for approximately $0.1 million, with $19.46 billion worth of shares remaining available for issuance and sale under that program.

The reversal is tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s response to Iran’s latest proposal, which he called “totally unacceptable.” Volatility returned at the macro headline level, not from a crypto-native catalyst, and that makes the move harder to cleanly price. BTC had already reclaimed $80,000, but the failed push above $82,000 showed how quickly geopolitical messaging can interrupt momentum after a strong rebound.

Many people like the idea of investing in cryptocurrency as a potential hedge against the inflation of the U.S. dollar—or simply as another way to diversify a portfolio. Its growth has been enormous in the past decade, often trouncing the returns of major stock market indices, which is a big part of why investors find it so attractive.

But similar to other cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin is vulnerable to extreme volatility and sudden price fluctuations.
Bitcoin has had a wild ride since its inception in 2009. In its infancy, software developer and early Bitcoin believer Laszlo Hanyecz famously paid 10,000 Bitcoins for pizza. Today, those coins would be worth over $668 million.

Over roughly the last decade, the cryptocurrency has had an astonishing rise—over 15,000%, in fact. But its upside also comes with real risk, as cryptocurrencies tend to be wildly unpredictable. Bitcoin has had some sharp dips, occasionally dropping tens of thousands of dollars in just a few months. But it has also made similarly dramatic climbs. In 2025, Bitcoin ended the calendar year dropping around 30% from its all-time high in October.

Bitcoin ($BTC) is approaching two major resistance zones that could determine its next market direction, according to cryptocurrency analyst Michael van de Poppe.

In an X post on May 9, the analyst identified the first key resistance area between $86,000 and $88,000, while the second and more significant zone sits between $93,000 and $95,000, aligning with Bitcoin’s 50-week moving average (MA).

Poppe noted that in previous market cycles, including 2017, 2021, and 2024, Bitcoin’s initial recovery rallies often faced rejection near former support levels or the 50-week moving average before establishing a sustained uptrend. He suggested the current setup is following a similar pattern.

His analysis showed Bitcoin recently breaking below the 50-week moving average, while the 200-week moving average is acting as key long-term support near the low $70,000 region.

The insights also identified the $93,000 to $95,000 zone as a likely resistance area where sellers could regain control if the rally weakens.

The outlook suggested Bitcoin may consolidate for several weeks beneath resistance, similar to previous cycles when extended ranging periods preceded broader upward trends and allowed altcoins to outperform.

To this end, the expert added that Bitcoin could still retest the $70,000 to $75,000 range before continuing higher, although he believes the broader bear market bottom is already in place.

Additional on-chain data shared by analyst Ali Martinez on May 8 reinforced the longer-term bullish outlook.

Martinez reported that about 7,400 Bitcoin had been withdrawn from exchanges over the previous week, a development typically associated with reduced immediate selling pressure as investors move holdings into private wallets for longer-term storage.

Considering these positive factors, Thielen stated that the $88,000 price target seems achievable.
