Bitcoin is caught between a $177 billion risk-on boom and the return of Fed rate-hike fears





Investors are piling into leveraged ETFs at a record pace, turning the Bitcoin risk-on boom into a test of whether speculative demand can survive hotter inflation and fading expectations of Fed rate cuts.

Bitcoin trades near $81,000 as of May 15, close enough to the $86,900 resistance ceiling to make a breakout plausible and to the $76,900 support floor to make a rejection consequential, according to a report by Glassnode.

US-leveraged ETF assets under management reportedly reached $177 billion, up $45 billion from the March market bottom.

In a recent report, AMBCrypto had observed that the higher timeframe price structure was bearish. Traders should beware of the rally, which at that time was at $3.7

Since reaching a high of $4.09, the AI crypto token has receded by 30.8%. ICP has fallen back into the local range (purple) between $2 and $2.84.

Combined with the higher timeframe bearish structure and the quick bearish reaction from the $4 supply zone, it appeared likely that the altcoin would see further losses.

Non-dollar stablecoins like A7A5 and $EURC are challenging Greenback-tied digital currencies like $USDT and $USDC in the digital-asset market in Russia and beyond.
The finding comes from a new study, which also examines how residents of Russia and other Russian-speaking countries are using cryptocurrencies.
Sanctioned Russian crypto viewed as main alternative to Tether
The ruble-pegged A7A5 has become a popular choice for many Russians who prefer to use it instead of dollar-backed stablecoins.
Some 53.7% of the 1,000 respondents in the survey have named it as the primary alternative to Tether’s $USDT and Circle’s USD Coin ($USDC).
The research was carried out by the sectioned stablecoin project, which released the data in a report titled “Russia’s Cryptocurrency Market.”
According to the authors, A7A5’s share of the non-dollar stablecoin market is around 41% in 2026, or approximately $550 million.
Its closest competitor, $EURC, accounts for about 32%. The coin is pegged 1:1 to the common European currency and also issued by Circle.
The Russia-linked A7A5 is issued by a Kyrgyzstan-registered platform called Old Vector and backed by ruble deposits at the Russian PSB Bank.
The latter is one of the organizations behind A7, a Russian payments company. A7 is majority-owned by the Moldovan oligarch with a Russian passport, Ilan Shor.
A7 is believed to have created the cryptocurrency, which has admittedly processed well over $100 billion in transactions since its launch in early 2025.
Entities associated with the stablecoin, such as the Kyrgyz-based exchange Grinex, have been targeted in Western sanctions for bypassing financial restrictions imposed over the invasion of Ukraine

Three poisoned versions of node-ipc went live on the npm registry on May 14, according to SlowMist. Attackers hijacked a dormant maintainer account and pushed code designed to siphon developer credentials, private keys, exchange API secrets, the works, straight out of .env files.

node-ipc is a popular Node.js package that lets different programs talk to each other on the same machine, or sometimes across a network.

SlowMist catches the breach

Blockchain security firm, SlowMist, spotted the breach through their MistEye threat intel system.

Versions 9.1.6, 9.2.3, and 12.0.1

MistEye found three malicious versions including:

Version 9.1.6.

Version 9.2.3.

Version 12.0.1.

All of the above verions carried the same obfuscated 80 KB payload.

Node-ipc handles inter-process communication in Node.js. It basically helps Node.js programs send messages back and forth. Over 822,000 people download it each week.

Node-ipc is used all over the crypto space. It’s used in the tools developers use to build dApps, in the systems that automatically test and deploy code (CI/CD), and in everyday developer tools.

Each infected version had the same hidden malicious code bolted onto it. The moment any program loaded node-ipc, the code ran automatically.

Researchers at StepSecurity figured out how the attack happened. The original developer of node-ipc had an email address tied to the domain atlantis-software[.]net. However, the domain expired on January 10, 2025.

On May 7, 2026, the attacker bought the same domain through Namecheap, which gave them control of the developer’s old email. From there, they just hit “forgot password” on npm, reset it, and walked right in with full permission to publish new versions of node-ipc.

Onramp Raises $12.5M Series A to Scale Multi-Institution Bitcoin Custody Platform

Onramp raised $12.5M in Series A at a $135M valuation to expand its institutional bitcoin custody platform.

Onramp has raised $12.5 million in a Series A round led by Early Riders, valuing the bitcoin financial services firm at $135 million as it pushes to scale a custody model designed to meet institutional standards.

The Austin-based company told Bitcoin Magazine it now holds more than $1 billion in assets under custody and has recorded zero security incidents since its founding in 2023. The new capital will support expansion of Onramp Finance, its recently launched platform that combines bitcoin custody, brokerage, and cash management, while funding new partnerships across banks, registered investment advisors, and fintech firms.

At the center of the strategy is Onramp’s Multi-Institution Custody (MIC) model, which distributes key control across several regulated custodians rather than relying on a single entity or placing full responsibility on clients. The system is built with partners including BitGo, Coincover, and Tetra Trust, allowing for shared control structures that can span jurisdictions.

The approach targets a long-standing tradeoff in digital asset custody. Investors have often had to choose between centralized platforms with counterparty risk and self-custody setups that require technical expertise and operational oversight. Onramp positions MIC as a middle path that removes single points of failure while keeping assets verifiable on-chain.

Institutional traction has begun to follow. UK pension fund Cartwright selected Onramp as custodian for its bitcoin allocation, while the Bitcoin Policy Institute has endorsed multi-party custody frameworks for potential state-level bitcoin reserves.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson said Monero represents the kind of privacy-preserving cryptocurrency Bitcoin might have become if stronger cryptographic tooling had been available at the time, praising the project’s technical design and its refusal to dilute its cypherpunk principles.

Speaking in an interview with David Gokhstein, the Cardano founder framed Monero not as a marginal privacy coin, but as one of the sector’s more important ideological and technical reference points. His comments centered less on price or market structure than on a broader debate over privacy, usability and what role uncompromising projects should play in crypto’s long-term direction.

“Honestly speaking, Monero is what Bitcoin should have been,” Hoskinson said. “They just didn’t have the technology at the time, and it’s a lot more complicated to run a privacy-preserving system. But there’s a lot to love in Monero, like the ASIC-resistant puzzles, the full-chain membership proofs, how they handle the view keys.”

Hoskinson’s argument was that privacy at scale is inherently harder to implement than transparent settlement. In his telling, Monero’s contribution is not limited to a single feature, but to a stack of design choices built around keeping privacy central while still maintaining a usable network.

He cited Monero’s work around ring signatures and privacy-preserving architecture as examples of a project that pushed crypto beyond transparent ledgers without abandoning decentralization. “These are smart things,” he said, adding that Monero “was a pioneer in ring signatures” and “a pioneer in a lot of privacy at scale.”
