A series of searches were conducted in the offices of a cryptocurrency exchange network located in the Federation East Tower (Moscow City) in connection with the embezzlement of 144 million rubles. Izvestia learned about this on July 31.
The victim of the crime was a man named Vladimir R., who fell under the influence of criminals. They, pretending to be employees of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), convinced the owner of a large sum to transfer it to them. The operation was carried out through one of the capital's crypto exchanges.
For the time being, all exchange points have been temporarily closed. In addition, dozens of people were detained in the building, eight of whom have already been placed under arrest.
On the same day, the Russian government introduced a ban on cryptocurrency mining in Moscow, the Moscow region, and a separate territory of the Kursk region, which will be in effect from August 15, 2026, until December 31, 2032.
A few days before this, on July 21, the State Duma of Russia adopted a law on introducing comprehensive regulation of the circulation of digital currencies and digital rights in the country. In accordance with it, from July 1, 2027, only those crypto exchanges and representatives of this sphere who have passed registration in a special state register will be allowed to operate.
