Is Crypto Funding A Risk To UK Politics? Lawmaker Seeks Temporary Ban
A senior UK security official, Matt Western, is calling for a temporary ban on cryptocurrency donations to political parties, warning that foreign governments could exploit the anonymity of digital assets to interfere in British politics. Western, who chairs the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, highlighted that oversight of political funding is fragmented across six agencies, leaving the UK vulnerable. He proposed creating a dedicated police unit to address this structural weakness. The temporary freeze would remain until official guidance is issued. If allowed in the future, crypto donations would face strict rules, including using only FCA-registered platforms, banning mixed funds, and converting crypto to fiat within 48 hours. He also advocated for stronger donor checks and harsher penalties for breaking finance laws.
