Institutions Lead RWA Growth, Panel Says at Consensus Hong Kong

At this year’s Consensus Hong Kong conference, one of the biggest talking points was the growing use of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs). Leaders from companies like Animoca Brands, Mastercard, and Robinhood said that this wave of growth is being driven by big institutions, not just everyday crypto traders.

During the panel, several RWA-related things were discussed. One of the main ones was that big financial institutions are leading the next stage of tokenized assets, using blockchain to work more efficiently and see transactions more clearly.

Experts also pointed to tokenized US bonds, money market funds, stablecoin tools, and smarter collateral use as the areas where such a shift is already well underway.

Panelists emphasized that blockchain can settle trades faster, reduce risk between trading partners, and provide clear, auditable records for markets that have long relied on slower, older systems. BlackRock’s COO called distributed ledgers one of the most transformative advances in finance since double-entry bookkeeping was invented.

Even though big investors are getting involved, most regular attendees said they haven’t added tokenized RWAs to their own portfolios yet. This shows there is still a need for clearer rules and more focused education before everyday people start using them in a big way. Having better retail interfaces would also help push that goal.

Beyond bonds and money funds, panelists highlighted other areas ripe for tokenization, including private loans, real estate, private company shares, and art. These are traditionally hard to trade or invest in, but tokenization could make them more accessible and easier to buy and sell.

Coinbase unveils crypto wallets designed specifically for Al agents

Coinbase has launched crypto wallet infrastructure that allows Al agents programs that can think and transact without human input to spend, earn and trade crypto.

In a post on Wednesday, Coinbase programmers Erik Reppel and Josh Nickerson said the new Agentic Wallets feature aims to build on today's agents, which can answer questions, summarize documents, and assist with tasks, but can't execute trades or orders on behalf of users.

"The next generation of agents won't just advise - they'll act," the pair said, adding that Al agents will be able to do everything from monitoring decentralized finance positions and rebalancing portfolios to paying for compute and API access and participating in creator economies. Reppel and Nickerson said Agentic Wallets build on Coinbase's AgentKit framework, introduced in November 2024, which enabled developers to embed wallets into agents.

The agents can transact via Coinbase's x402, a purpose-built payments protocol for autonomous Al use cases that has already reportedly seen 50 million transactions.

ETF flow data reveals a split market, with long-term allocators buying as short-term traders exit.

Gold’s surge and shifting investor behavior are reshaping this Bitcoin sell-off.

Bitcoin is down over 45% from its October 2025 peak, spot crypto fund AUM has dropped to $130 billion, and roughly 40% of spot Bitcoin ETF holders would need a 50% recovery just to break even.

But according to Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan and GraniteShares CEO Will Rhind in a recent CNBC interview, the people selling are not who most expect.

ETF Investors Are Not Driving the Bitcoin Sell-Off

Net outflows from Bitcoin ETFs have been roughly $7 billion, a small number compared to total AUM. Most of the decline comes from price drops, not redemptions.

The primary sellers are long-term, original crypto holders who built positions over 15 years and are now trimming. On the other side, financial advisor channels have been buying the dip.

Hedge funds and short-term traders within the same ETFs are the ones creating outflows, which masks the advisor-side buying entirely.

Hougan described it as two different markets inside the same product: fast money trading the next month versus long-term allocators investing over 4-5 years.

Gold Puts Pressure on Bitcoin

Gold breaking past $5,000 an ounce while Bitcoin falls has made things harder for crypto investors.

Rhind addressed it:

“It’s tough to be a Bitcoin investor or crypto investor right now when you look at the price of gold going through $5,000 an ounce… the precious metals thing has really caught crypto investors sort of off guard. This is not supposed to happen.”
