Ethereum Privacy Proposal Could Lower Barriers for Institutional Staking, Sygnum Says

A proposed upgrade to Ethereum’s privacy features could make institutional staking more attractive by concealing sensitive on-chain data, but it would also introduce new operational costs and complexities, according to Swiss digital asset bank Sygnum.

How EIP-8222 Would Work

The proposal, known as EIP-8222, aims to decouple staking deposit addresses from validator and withdrawal information. Currently, these data points are publicly linked on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing anyone to track an institution’s holdings, entry timing, and operating strategies. This transparency, while a core feature of public blockchains, has been a deterrent for institutional investors who prioritize strategic privacy.

Thibault Dubuis, Sygnum’s head of staking and DeFi, explained that adding privacy features could lower the barrier to market entry for institutions by shielding their activities from competitors and the public. The proposal leverages STARK-based cryptography to re-anonymize validators and separate deposits from withdrawals.

The Trade-Off: Lower Entry Barriers, Higher Operating Costs

While EIP-8222 could address privacy concerns, Dubuis cautioned that it would also raise practical barriers to trade execution and operations. The proposal introduces a fixed-denomination deposit structure and mandatory waiting times for withdrawals, which could reduce capital efficiency and slow processing times.

Furthermore, the operational burdens tied to key management, custody, slashing risk, and regulatory reporting would remain. Institutions would still need to navigate complex compliance frameworks, even with enhanced privacy features.

Seven of the ten key indicators monitored for $SHIB currently lean bullish, according to the most recent metrics, indicating that underlying network activity may be improving despite poor market performance.Reduced exchange reserves typically mean that there are not as many tokens up for sale right now, which lessens the selling pressure. The second metric, Exchange Netflow, which is still negative at about -64.8 billion $SHIB, supports this trend. A negative netflow, which is usually an indication of accumulation, indicates that more coins are leaving exchanges than are entering them.Active Addresses, which rose by more than 1% in the past day, is a third encouraging indicator. Increased address activity frequently indicates increased network participation and user engagement. Despite $SHIB's decline, the slight increase implies that demand has not entirely vanished. Exchange outflow, which is greater than inflow volumes, is the fourth bullish factor.About 250.2 billion $SHIB left exchanges while 185.4 billion entered. The idea that investors are still transferring tokens into self-custody rather than getting them ready for sale is supported by this disparity. Exchange Inflow Mean and Exchange Outflow Mean are the fifth and sixth bullish metrics. The significantly higher average outflow transaction size suggests that larger holders are still taking significant amounts of $SHIB out of trading platforms, even though both have increased.

Crypto lobby sues Illinois over 0.2% digital asset tax: ‘Violates state constitution’Crypto lobby group The Digital Chamber (TDC) has moved to block Illinois state’s 0.2% blanket digital asset tax rule.

In a lawsuit filed in Sangamon County, Illinois, the trade group argued the move would “address the unfair tax burden” the crypto tax rule would impose on users and businesses in the state.The Illinois law, set to become effective from January 2027, slaps a 0.2% tax on any crypto transactions. This applies to gross transaction value. In fact, it does not take into account whether you made a loss or profit or moved funds between your wallets.

Besides, you still have to pay the typical capital gains tax on top of this fee, making it one of the most punitive crypto tax regimes in the U.S. Initially, the industry slammed the state for the crypto tax policy. Even state representative John Cabello introduced a measure to repeal the tax law, citing a lack of public committee hearing before its passage.

Beyond mere rhetoric from the industry, The Digital Chamber is the first one to make a legal push to remedy the situation. In the lawsuit, the trade group arguedThe U.S. currently has no single federal crypto tax regime, leaving states to chart their own path for the same.  However, there is a congressional push for crypto tax clarity, including treatment of mining and staking.

The recent proposals in the House were supported by the industry. In fact, the sector wants the bills to be passed as they are.
As of writing, the proposals have not even cleared the committee vote. Given the tight window ahead of the November elections, the tax bills may be delayed until next year.
