Ripple wins EU-wide access as ESMA adds it to MiCA register

Ripple Payments Europe has joined 14 other firms in ESMA’s latest MiCA register update, lifting the number of approved crypto asset service providers to 294.

ESMA’s updated register identifies Ripple Payments Europe SA as an authorized crypto asset service provider, allowing the company’s European payments unit to offer regulated crypto services across 29 EU countries.

The authorization follows Ripple’s earlier approval in Luxembourg under the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. According to Ripple, the Luxembourg license permits its European subsidiary to serve financial institutions and businesses throughout the European Economic Area.

Combined with its existing electronic money institution license in Luxembourg, the CASP approval gives Ripple permission to provide crypto asset and stablecoin payment services. Ripple has stated that banks, fintech companies, and corporate clients can use one integration to collect funds, exchange assets, and make payments.

Ripple gains access as banks enter the MiCA market

Alongside Ripple, ESMA added Portugal-based Bison Bank, Croatia’s state-owned Hrvatska poštanska banka, and Liechtenstein-based Kaiser Partner Privatbank to the register. Their inclusion shows that regulated banks are also seeking permission to provide digital asset services under MiCA.

Payment processor BitPay has separately secured MiCA authorization from the Dutch financial regulator, according to the original report. The license allows BitPay to provide crypto and stablecoin payment services across eligible EU markets through MiCA’s passporting system.

Coinbase Sell-Off Creates Buying Opportunity For Wall Street: Report
Institutional researchers at William Blair say Coinbase stock (COIN) is positioned for a rebound next year despite shortcomings over the past few months. The asset has plunged over 30% since January, alongside major crypto stocks posting similar numbers. Crypto stocks are assets that typically move in tandem with Bitcoin (BTC).

In a new research note, the Chicago-based investment bank slashed its 2026 estimates for the asset, as risks remain. The firm lowered revenue projections by 12% this year and adjusted EBITDA projections by 13%. 

Trading volumes are also tipped to decline further, to approximately $669 billion, or 44%. Basically, Coinbase will face major headwinds if current market conditions intensify. 

COIN is down 30% since January, with no major positive breakout expected in the coming months. The decline is linked to the broader crypto market downturn, during which Bitcoin has shed over 20% in the same period. The top crypto is also down over 30% since its all-time high above $125k in 2025.

As a crypto stock, institutional offloads from Bitcoin affected the exchange stock market, marked by declining trading volumes. While liquidations persist, the plunge in COIN and other crypto stocks continues to highlight the correlation between the two markets.

However, William Blair analysts led by Andrew Jeffrey and Adib Choudhury noted that though earnings will plunge further, they would pick up in 2027. This projection also coincides with a similar forecast for the crypto market as bulls aim to wipe out previous losses.

Furthermore, the recovery differs from the 2022 dip because of high whale activity.

The European Central Bank has warned that stablecoin adoption could destroy commercial banks’ retail deposit base.

However, here’s an uncomfortable question. Is the digital euro being built to improve payments, or to stop banks from losing deposits, data, and customers?

ECB warns stablecoins could weaken banks
ECB executive board member Piero Cipollone recently spoke at a meeting of the Federation of Italian Cooperative Credit Banks. In his address, he warned that wider stablecoin use could reduce bank deposits. In parallel, mobile payment providers are already taking away payment fees and customer data.

In his view, this is not only a banking issue. It brings Europe’s dependence on foreign payment systems to the forefront.

As a solution, Cipollone proposed,

The digital euro would both preserve the role of public money and ensure banks remain involved in the payments ecosystem while continuing to meet their customers’ needs.

Work on the project is already moving ahead. The ECB has selected 36 banks, fintech firms, and payment companies for a 12-month pilot expected to begin in the second half of 2027.

A final decision has not been made, but the digital euro could be issued as early as 2029.

Bid to regain control?
One of the main goals of the digital euro is to reduce Europe’s dependence on foreign card networks and payment platforms. That could improve resilience and reduce outside participation.

It would also give the region more control over money flow.

The project would also help banks retain a central role as stablecoins and fintech firms gain ground. This does not make the digital euro purely defensive, but it does mean its success should be judged by more than strategic control.

The real measure will be whether it makes payments cheaper, easier and more useful for consumers and businesses. Without that, it risks becoming a tool that protects

Anthropic in early talks to lease Meta compute in $10 million deal

Anthropic has asked to lease AI computing power from Meta in an arrangement that could reach $10 billion over two years, the New York Times reported on Friday, a sign that the Claude maker still cannot secure enough chips to keep up with compute demand.

The Times, citing people familiar with the matter, said Anthropic forwarded the proposal to Meta in June and that Meta is still thinking about it.The talks are still considered preliminary, and either side could pull out of the agreement before the two years are up. If a deal does get signed, Anthropic is expected to pay Meta on a monthly basis.

This deal will trail the contract Anthropic struck in May with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, committing Anthropic to $45 billion over three years at about $1.25 billion a month for access to Nvidia GPUs at the Colossus 1 data center.
