What Determines the Price of Bitcoin (BTC)? Coinbase CEO Explains, Putting an End to the Debate!

As tensions between the US and Iran continue to cause volatility in the leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has made new statements.

In new assessments made from account X, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that the key factor determining Bitcoin’s long-term price is not mining activity or network energy consumption, but investors’ expectations regarding inflation.

At this point, the Coinbase CEO argued that the $BTC price was driven by inflation fears, not mining, saying the price moved in parallel with inflation concerns.

Fresh U.S. inflation data briefly lifted sentiment across financial markets this week, but the optimism quickly faded in the cryptocurrency market. Although inflation came in below economists' expectations, investors remained focused on the Federal Reserve's next policy moves and ongoing geopolitical tensions, keeping demand for Bitcoin and other digital assets subdued.

The latest data showed annual Consumer Price Index inflation slowed to 3.5%, below expectations of 3.8%, while Core Producer Price Index inflation rose 0.2%, also coming in below forecasts of 0.3%. Even so, traders remained cautious as uncertainty over interest rates, market liquidity and global developments continued to weigh on risk appetite.

Fed Concerns Continue to Weigh on Crypto

Soft inflation data generally help the risk assets because it means that the expectations regarding possible Fed rate cuts become more favorable. Nevertheless, the market still stays cautious, and there is an expectation that interest rates might remain high for a while.

Increased cost of borrowing decreases liquidity in the system, and thus reduces the demand for risky assets including cryptocurrencies.

Also, conflicts in the Middle East region persist and affect the market negatively. In spite of the signals about cooling of inflation numbers, many market participants stay cautious due to geopolitical tensions and increased interest rates expectations.

Известный венчурный инвестор и один из первых сторонников Bitcoin Чамат Палихапития заявил, что сейчас перед Bitcoin и всем криптовалютным рынком стоят две ключевые структурные проблемы.

Две главные проблемы

1. Приток капитала уходит в другие рынки

По словам Палихапитии, новые инвестиции («маржинальная ликвидность») все чаще направляются не в криптовалюты, а в:

рынки прогнозов (prediction markets);

фондовый рынок.


Это снижает объем капитала, поступающего в Bitcoin и другие цифровые активы.

2. Конкуренция с искусственным интеллектом за энергоресурсы

Второй проблемой он назвал растущий спрос со стороны индустрии искусственного интеллекта (AI).

По мнению инвестора, электроэнергия, которая сегодня используется для майнинга Bitcoin, могла бы приносить в 10–20 раз больше экономической ценности, если бы направлялась на питание дата-центров и инфраструктуры ИИ.
