BTC, ETH, XRP Whales Step Up Accumulation as CryptoQuant Sees the Bear Market Nearing Its End

Large Bitcoin, Ether, and $XRP holders continued accumulating during recent market weakness, analytics firm CryptoQuant said.

The firm’s weekly report, Buying the Bear: A Signal of the Bear Market’s Final Stage, examined the recent accumulation by the largest wallets. It said the steady buying reflects behavior often seen during the closing phase of a bear market.For Bitcoin, wallets linked to major holders, excluding exchanges and miners, expanded their combined balance to about 3.06 million BTC this year. Buying accelerated after Bitcoin fell below $60,000 in June, though holdings remain below the 2025 cycle peak.Ethereum showed an even stronger accumulation trend among its largest holders. Wallets holding between 10,000 and 100,000 $ETH reached a record of 19.6 million $ETH.

This bitcoin miner rejected BIP-110 despite mining through a pool that supported it

A bitcoin miner chose not to back BIP-110 on Sunday, using a tool from its own mining pool that let it decide what went into the block rather than leaving that to the pool.

Simple Mining said it produced block 961,634 on the main chain, two blocks past the point where BIP-110 supporters broke away.The choice is notable because Ocean, the pool it mines with, had switched miners to signal for BIP-110 by default in July and accounted for nearly all of the proposal's small amount of mining support before the split.

BIP-110, short for Bitcoin Improvement Proposal-110, is a move to stop people storing pictures, text and other non-financial data inside bitcoin transactions for a year.

Crypto’s first quantum attack will look like an unexplained breach: Quantus founder

The first sign that quantum computing has broken modern cryptography probably won’t be a splashy theft of Satoshi Nakamoto’s dormant Bitcoin. It could just be a wave of unrelated crypto wallet breaches with no trace of how an attacker did it, according to the founder of blockchain startup Quantus.

“When someone cracks your key, you don’t get a memo saying how they did it,” Christopher Smith, CEO and co-founder of Quantus Network, told Cointelegraph. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could derive a private key from public keys exposed onchain, allowing an attacker to move funds without compromising a wallet, device or exchange’s internal systems.

This makes the arrival of “Q-day” — a hypothetical future moment when quantum computers become powerful enough to break standard public-key cryptography — unusually difficult to detect. In a theft involving a highly secure organization, “the only forensic evidence would be that there was no breach,” Smith said.

Smith’s warning comes as advances in quantum algorithms have reduced estimates of computing resources needed to attack the elliptic-curve cryptography used by major blockchains.

Inside stablecoin firm BVNK’s journey to a $1.8B acquisition by Mastercard

Long before big-ticket crypto deals and billion-dollar acquisitions make headlines, there’s a long and hard-fought journey, often culminating in a secretive contest where jockeying suitors bid, bluff or walk, until eventually the best match makes it down the aisle. Mastercard’s recent $1.8 billion acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK was no exception.

It’s a process that takes place out of view, under iron-clad non-disclosure agreements, but venture capital firm Concentric — an early investor in BVNK — gave CoinDesk a rare peek behind the curtain, beginning with the startup’s rise and ending with the completion of the deal earlier this week.

The venture capital business is a numbers game. In the case of BVNK, Concentric’s bet paid off: the VC firm backed the stablecoin startup in 2019 at a valuation of just $4 million. Founding partner of Concentric, Kjartan Rist, recalled being introduced to BVNK in 2018.

“They came to us highly recommended by an alumni CEO that we had already backed,” Rist told CoinDesk in an interview. “So, there was a lot of trust there, and this CEO said, ‘You got to meet these guys’. They were serial entrepreneurs coming out of South Africa. They’d never built businesses outside of South Africa, but they were hungry. They were relentless.”

Despite enjoying a sturdy exit, Rist said he feels mixed emotions toward the Mastercard acquisition, having been part of the whole BVNK journey. “It’s actually sad to sign the papers, almost like sending your son off to boarding school,” he said.

Chris Harmse, co-founder and chief business officer at BVNK echoed this: “It's been an incredible journey,” he said in an email. “Concentric has been a valued partner throughout that journey.”
