Bitcoin's open interest fell 1.75% over the last 24 hours. A decrease in open interest alongside an increase in spot price typically indicates short covering, signaling that short sellers are buying back contracts to exit positions.

That said, "Fear" sentiment prevailed in the market, according to the Crypto Fear & Greed Index.

Federal Police in Brazil has taken action against a high-profile drug trafficking ring that used cryptocurrency to launder the funds obtained for its narcotics export activity to Europe.

On Thursday, the Brazilian federal Police announced the results of Operation Commodity, which terminated the activities of a group that used the port of Rio de Janeiro to smuggle cocaine hidden in coffee, cement, and mortar shipments that were mainly sent to Europe, using a logistics network spanning South America, Europe, and Asia.

Investigations hint at over 6.5 tons of cocaine processed by the group since 2021 to various European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain.

During the operation, which encompassed actions in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo, 13 preventive arrests and 44 search-and-seizures were executed, with courts ordering the seizure of assets and freezing of property up to 1 billion reais (nearly $196 million). A shootout erupted in one of these locations, with a suspect dying of gunshot wounds as he resisted.

The group had links to the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), two criminal organizations that the Trump Administration designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) and were previously targeted in Operation Exchange, which dismantled a $2 billion crypto money laundering ring earlier this month.

The police indicated that a luxury car dealership located in Greater São Paulo, which offered Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover vehicles, was part of the operation that used shell companies to launder the drug trafficking proceeds using cryptocurrency.

KULR Technology Group, a US-listed battery technology company, and The Smarter Web Company, a UK-listed web services group with a Bitcoin treasury strategy, have sold approximately 511 BTC and used the proceeds to retire approximately $31.7 million of obligations in disclosures published one day apart.

The total comprises $20 million of KULR principal and Smarter Web’s exact $11,698,540 repayment. Both companies acted voluntarily and retained substantial Bitcoin reserves; neither disclosure described a lender-forced liquidation. The shared consequence is that financing can turn assets presented as long-term holdings into repayment inventory without ending a treasury strategy.

KULR’s July 24 filing said it sold approximately 333 BTC from July 9 through July 23 at a weighted-average price of approximately $64,538, generating about $21.5 million in gross proceeds. It used the net proceeds to clear all principal under its $20 million Coinbase Credit facility. Accrued interest still had to be calculated at month-end and was expected to be paid in August 2026.

KULR said the sale was a deliberate step to reduce interest expense and remove collateral and liquidation risk. An earlier quarterly filing showed a March $5 million draw with a 7% loan fee and a May $15 million draw carrying a 7% yearly financing charge paid monthly. KULR expected 565 pledged BTC to be released and reported approximately 760 BTC still in its treasury.

Smarter Web’s July 23 announcement described a different trade. At the company’s request and with support from TOBAM-related noteholders, it sold exactly 177.8909127 BTC at an average of $65,762 to repay Smarter Convert approximately two weeks before maturity.

Numbers issued by the Central Bank of El Salvador revealed that during the first half of 2026, only $35.4 million of the total volume of external remittances was sent to the country using digital currency channels. The figure represents less than 1% of all funds sent to the country in 2026, which reached over $5 billion.

In comparison, cash remittances, which are handed over personally when senders travel from another country to El Salvador to visit their relatives, rose to 3.8%. Even so, crypto remittance numbers are significantly higher than those reached during H1 2025, when these registered $25.4 million in volumes, a rise of 39.1%.

Total remittances for the period also rose from $4.84 billion to 5.06 billion, a rise of 219.2 million (4.5%). Remittance companies and banks constitute the preferred channels for Salvadorans to send money home, intermediating over 84% of the volume received from abroad.
