Stablecoins Are Becoming Payment Infrastructure, Not Crypto Assets
Stablecoins began as a narrow solution for crypto traders who needed a reliable way to move between volatile assets without exiting the market, but that original use case no longer defines their role in the financial system today.

What is happening now is a structural shift in how stablecoins are used, who is using them, and where they sit within the broader financial stack.

Over the past decade, stablecoins have moved through three distinct phases. In the early years, they functioned primarily as liquidity tools for trading, enabling faster movement of capital across exchanges. As decentralized finance expanded, they became core collateral instruments, supporting lending, borrowing, and yield generation strategies across crypto-native ecosystems. Today, however, they are entering a third phase, where their primary role is no longer tied to crypto markets but to real-world financial operations, particularly in payments and treasury management.

JPMorgan lifts Bitcoin ETF exposure in Q1, led by BlackRock's IBIT

JPMorgan Chase increased its reported holdings in several Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the first quarter, led by a 174% jump in its position in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), according to a 13F filing published Wednesday.

The bank increased its position in IBIT from around 3 million shares in Q4 2025 to 8.3 million shares, according to the filing.

The increase added about $162 million in reported value, based on filing data, despite Bitcoin price falling by more than 22% in Q1, according to CoinGlass data.

The filing also showed broader activity across crypto-linked assets, including new and expanded positions in funds tied to Ethereum and Solana, alongside rotation in equities tied to miners and companies with digital asset exposure.

While Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoins have recently experienced a surge, some altcoins have stood out more than others due to their price increases.

One of them is Zcash ($ZEC). With interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies rapidly returning globally, Zcash has gained over 33% in value this month.

While $ZEC attracted market attention with its rise, the Wall Street Journal also highlighted Zcash.

At this point, the WSJ brought Zcash back into the spotlight in its latest report, describing it as “the next Bitcoin”.

According to the Wall Street Journal, many early Bitcoin supporters who attended the 2026 Las Vegas crypto conference expressed their disappointment with how transparent and institutionalized Bitcoin has become.

The WSJ added that its comparison of $ZEC to Bitcoin was also based on the following reasons:

“Grayscale is pushing for a spot $ZEC ETF.

Privacy narratives are returning to crypto markets amid rising surveillance concerns.”

Barry Silbert, a prominent figure in the industry, recently described Zcash as “the Bitcoin of 2013,” and following the WSJ report, commented, “Zcash ($ZEC) is featured in the WSJ for the first time.”

According to market analysts, while optimism and excitement have recently increased for Zcash, it still has a much smaller market share than Bitcoin. $ZEC’s current market capitalization is approximately $8.9 billion, a figure that represents only a small fraction of Bitcoin’s trillion-dollar market size.
