Long before big-ticket crypto deals and billion-dollar acquisitions make headlines, there’s a long and hard-fought journey, often culminating in a secretive contest where jockeying suitors bid, bluff or walk, until eventually the best match makes it down the aisle. Mastercard’s recent $1.8 billion acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK was no exception.

It’s a process that takes place out of view, under iron-clad non-disclosure agreements, but venture capital firm Concentric — an early investor in BVNK — gave CoinDesk a rare peek behind the curtain, beginning with the startup’s rise and ending with the completion of the deal earlier this week.

The venture capital business is a numbers game. In the case of BVNK, Concentric’s bet paid off: the VC firm backed the stablecoin startup in 2019 at a valuation of just $4 million. Founding partner of Concentric, Kjartan Rist, recalled being introduced to BVNK in 2018.

“They came to us highly recommended by an alumni CEO that we had already backed,” Rist told CoinDesk in an interview. “So, there was a lot of trust there, and this CEO said, ‘You got to meet these guys’. They were serial entrepreneurs coming out of South Africa. They’d never built businesses outside of South Africa, but they were hungry. They were relentless.”

Despite enjoying a sturdy exit, Rist said he feels mixed emotions toward the Mastercard acquisition, having been part of the whole BVNK journey. “It’s actually sad to sign the papers, almost like sending your son off to boarding school,” he said.

Chris Harmse, co-founder and chief business officer at BVNK echoed this: “It's been an incredible journey,” he said in an email. “Concentric has been a valued partner throughout that journey.”

Stablecoins, one of the busiest areas of crypto, have become a focal point for the large card networks and payments players. The total stablecoin market cap is about $300 billion,

U.S. CPI inflation, Securitize, Gemini among earnings reports: Crypto Week AheadCrypto markets enter the week with the near-term direction tied to whether easing U.S. inflation can keep the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy on hold and take pressure off the dollar into year-end.

Consumer price index data due Wednesday is the first test, but the larger question is whether weaker labor demand is beginning to outweigh price pressures still above the central bank’s target.

ING strategists Chris Turner and Francesco Pesole say they expect a no-increase outcome to create a more supportive cross-asset backdrop.

“If we’re right on the Fed, the dollar should be due a benign decline into year-end in what should be a risk-positive climate,” they wrote in a report. A hotter CPI print would challenge that path and put Treasury yields and the dollar back at the center of crypto trading.

Geopolitical instability will keep on playing a role in crypto prices. As war in the Middle East threatens vital oil passageways, inflation expectations could increase and, along with them, interest-rate-hike expectations.

XRP is getting left behind in the crypto bounce even as ETFs keep attracting investor money

Payments-focused cryptocurrency $XRP dropped about 5% to $1.03 last week, even as bitcoin BTC$64,992.63, ether ETH$1,918.56, and solana (SOL) each climbed 1% to 4%. The broader crypto market added 1.4%, pushing total market capitalization to $2.19 trillion. $XRP is currently hovering near $1.03.

The underperformance is puzzling because $XRP exchange-traded funds still attracted net investor capital for a fourth consecutive week. The inflows, however, have slowed sharply, collapsing roughly 93% week-over-week to around $1 million, according to data source SoSoValue. Meanwhile, bitcoin and ether funds pulled in hundreds of millions.

Traders and analysts on X and elsewhere point to several overlapping explanations for the price apathy. Regulatory uncertainty tops the list: the Senate has delayed consideration of the CLARITY Act, the legislation many view as key to clarifying $XRP’s status and unlocking broader institutional participation. That vote is not expected until mid-September at the earliest.

On the flow side, the setup currently looks balanced.

“$XRP’s positioning looks patient in its own right, with order flow staying large even as volume metrics turn neutral — quiet absorption rather than capitulation or a confirmed breakout,” Iliya Kalchev,, analyst at Nexo, said in an email.

Still, long-term optimism remains high.

Large Bitcoin, Ether, and $XRP holders continued accumulating during recent market weakness, analytics firm CryptoQuant said.

The firm’s weekly report, Buying the Bear: A Signal of the Bear Market’s Final Stage, examined the recent accumulation by the largest wallets. It said the steady buying reflects behavior often seen during the closing phase of a bear market.For Bitcoin, wallets linked to major holders, excluding exchanges and miners, expanded their combined balance to about 3.06 million BTC this year.
