When a company buys hundreds of millions of dollars of Bitcoin and the price barely moves, it did not use an exchange. It used an OTC desk. Here is a puzzle that confuses almost everyone new to crypto markets. A public company announces it bought $500 million of Bitcoin. On any exchange, an order that size would tear through the order book, spike the price, and cost the buyer a fortune in slippage, everyone would see it coming and front-run it. Yet the announcements keep arriving, the purchases keep completing, and the price frequently barely reacts. How?

The answer is a corner of the market most retail traders never touch and much of the real money never leaves: over-the-counter trading. OTC desks are where whales, institutions, corporate treasuries, miners, funds, and governments buy and sell crypto in sizes that would be impossible on public exchanges, through private, negotiated transactions that never appear in any order book. A large and growing share of crypto’s genuine volume happens here, off-screen, and the on-exchange charts that most analysis obsesses over are, in a real sense, only the visible tip of the market.

The U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ] plans to dismiss its criminal case against Matthew Goettsche, the alleged founder of the BitClub Network cryptocurrency investment scheme, Bloomberg Law reported. This could potentially bring one of the longest-running crypto fraud prosecutions to an end.

The reported move comes nearly seven years after federal prosecutors accused Goettsche and several co-defendants of operating a global cryptocurrency mining scheme that allegedly defrauded investors of at least $722 million.

While the DOJ is reportedly preparing to dismiss the case with prejudice, no dismissal motion had appeared on the public court docket at the time of writing.

AscendEX stopped operating July 1 and said some withdrawals may not be processed after a July 6 notice.

AscendEX shut down on July 1, leaving some customers unsure whether they will recover their funds.

The exchange said in a July 6 notice that it does not hold authorization under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. It also cited financial and operational pressures, including a failed strategic transaction expected to provide liquidity.

Customers can no longer use AscendEX to open accounts, deposit funds, trade, swap, stake or lend. They should retain access only to withdraw assets and complete other exit steps, provided the platform remains available, and no legal or insolvency restrictions intervene.

Hoskinson Confirms Cardano’s Strong Fundamentals Ahead of Historic Network Upgrade

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has reaffirmed the blockchain’s long-term strength, insisting that the network remains fundamentally secure as it prepares for what he described as its biggest protocol upgrade to date.

Meanwhile, his comments came during a lengthy community update addressing the recent SeccFi wallet security incident, where he distinguished between vulnerabilities affecting a third-party wallet implementation and the Cardano blockchain itself.

According to Hoskinson, while the hack has raised important questions about wallet security and ecosystem governance, it has not impacted the integrity of Cardano’s core protocol.

Notably, Hoskinson revealed that he has been testing new features enabled by Cardano’s upcoming hard fork, particularly advanced zero-knowledge proof verification capabilities.

Speaking last Monday, Hoskinson said he had spent the weekend successfully implementing a Groth16 verifier on the Cardano preview network, demonstrating new capabilities introduced by Cardano’s upcoming network upgrade.
The upgrade introduces new primitives capable of verifying complex cryptographic proofs while allowing users to prove wallet ownership without exposing sensitive information. Hoskinson explained that these improvements could eventually support sophisticated recovery mechanisms for compromised wallets if needed.

Although the work was inspired by the SeccFi incident, he noted that the research also showcased how far Cardano’s smart contract capabilities have evolved.

“It’s nice to know that Cardano’s really moved forward and it is able to do lots of interesting cool things,” he stated.

He added that these capabilities are portable across different wallet interfaces and demonstrate significant progress in Cardano’s zero-knowledge infrastructure.
