The market reaction followed the collapse of extended talks in Islamabad, which reportedly lasted more than 20 hours. U.S. officials said Iranian representatives refused to accept proposed terms, while Iranian state media blamed “unreasonable demands” from Washington.
Earlier optimism around a potential ceasefire had briefly supported risk assets, but sentiment quickly reversed as negotiations failed to progress. Investors remain cautious, with uncertainty still high over whether a broader diplomatic breakthrough is possible.

Reports suggest a theoretical proposal where Iran could charge a $1 Bitcoin toll per barrel of oil passing through the strait. If such a mechanism were ever implemented at scale, it could imply roughly $20 million in daily BTC flow—highlighting how digital assets might intersect with real-world geopolitical infrastructure.
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues that these developments reflect a deeper structural shift: in a world where traditional fiat systems can be influenced or “weaponized” through sanctions and financial controls, Bitcoin is increasingly being viewed as a neutral, borderless alternative.
According to Hougan, Bitcoin’s original narrative as “digital gold” (a store of value) may be expanding. In limited but meaningful scenarios, it could also begin to function as a transactional medium—effectively giving it a dual identity as both “gold and currency.”
Previously, Bitwise estimated that Bitcoin could reach $1 million if it captures around 17% of the global $38 trillion store-of-value market over the next decade. However, Hougan suggests that if Bitcoin’s use cases broaden beyond storage of value into currency-like functions, those long-term projections may need to be revised upward.
While still speculative, the broader implication is clear: global uncertainty is accelerating the search for apolitical financial rails—and Bitcoin is increasingly part of that conversation.
The question is no longer just whether Bitcoin is digital gold, but whether it could evolve into something even broader in the global financial system.
