XRP Crowd Sentiment Hits 3-Month Bearish Extreme as Ledger Activity Jumps

XRP’s slide back below $1.00 has pushed social chatter into its most bearish stretch in three months. The XRP Ledger, however, logged 49,929 active addresses in a single 24-hour window—the highest in over two months—according to the Santiment update.

That split makes the current setup difficult to read. Retail traders on X, Reddit, Telegram, and other crypto channels have turned sharply pessimistic as price failed to rally. Earlier July activity had fallen close to 2026 lows, so the jump in active addresses is not just a one-off bounce from elevated levels—it is a reversal from a quiet period.

What active addresses do and don’t say
Active addresses are a basic but useful on-chain signal. They count unique wallet addresses taking part in transactions, which captures participation rather than price direction. The metric does not distinguish between buying, selling, or ordinary transfers. Still, falling price plus rising participation often looks like capitulation or accumulation rather than disinterest.

For comparison, on-chain and developer activity across major chains has become a common screen for separating network use from pure token speculation. XRP’s spike in active addresses is narrower, but it points to engagement rather than a dead chain.

The $1.00 line remains the pivot

XRP dropping back below $1.00 changes how traders read the chart. The level has long functioned as a psychological threshold, and the update notes retail sentiment is likely to stay ugly while price sits under it. Policy pressure is not absent either. With major crypto legislation still being contested in Washington, altcoin traders have had little reason to chase upside.

The bearish sentiment reading carries its own weight. Three months of compressed negativity means a large part of the retail crowd has already priced in more downside.

Protocol development is also progressing. Recent updates have highlighted work around wallet migration, voting and core development, while Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox has called for early activation of the NSM smooth issuance mechanism. Network activity adds another layer to the story. Cumulative shielded transactions across Sapling and Orchard have now exceeded 3.29 million, with Orchard alone accounting for more than 1.22 million transactions. That points to continued usage of Zcash’s core privacy functionality rather than a rally based purely on speculation.

The Coldcard hack proves reputation is not a security model
Attackers have now drained nearly $114 million in bitcoin from more than 709 addresses, exploiting a Coldcard firmware flaw that generated wallet seeds with a fraction of their promised randomness. The first sweep emptied roughly 500 wallets in 25 minutes. The bug entered the codebase in March 2021 and sat in public, open-source view for more than five years. Plenty of people are explaining what happened. The harder question is why nobody caught it, and the answer implicates far more than one line of code.

Coldcard's source code was always available for inspection. "Don't trust, verify" only works when qualified people actually look, and for five years, effectively nobody did. The timeline around the bug's introduction deserves attention. In 2020, Coldcard's firmware carried a GPL open-source license. Two days after a competitor announced a device building on that GPL code, Coinkite CEO Rodolfo Novak, known as NVK, said publicly (in a since-deleted tweet) that he regretted choosing GPL. That November, Coldcard adopted a new license with the Commons Clause, whose own FAQ states plainly that the resulting software is no longer open source. A sweeping rewrite followed, and the March 2021 commit that stripped out the last GPL code is the same commit that broke seed generation.

Nobody can measure how much licensing pressure shaped the scope or speed of that rewrite, and the overhaul also pursued legitimate technical goals. The documented facts are narrower and still damning: a license change made to restrict competitors preceded a rushed replacement of battle-tested cryptographic code, and the replacement contained the flaw now draining wallets. Free and open-source software principles exist precisely to keep security from depending on any one company's choices.
