Over the years, institutional participation in Bitcoin has grown significantly, turning the asset from a specialized digital experiment into a well-known part of contemporary financial portfolios. This accumulation by corporations, asset managers, and financial institutions points to growing conviction in the asset as a reliable store of value and a strategic financial asset.

After years of steady accumulation, On-Chain Mind, a crypto data analyst on X, reported that the institutional Bitcoin stack has now reached a staggering 3.24 million BTC, valued at approximately $261.2 billion at current price levels. According to the expert, this BTC stash is equivalent to almost the entire new issuance of BTC in the last 20 years.

As seen in the chart, the Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) hold about 1.39 million BTC, reflecting around 42.9% of the entire holdings of institutions. Furthermore, Corporate firms hold 1.23 million BTC, representing 38.0% of the institutional stack. Meanwhile, approximately 619,500 BTC, which marks over 19.1% of the stash, is being held by Sovereigns.

On May 13, Kelp DAO and Aave announced the completion of the first tranche to restore full operations for rsETH after the recent hack incident, which is a liquid restaking token. The first batch of this transaction of rsETH was transferred by Aave into the LayerZero OFT Adapter under their plan to restore the operation with great coordination.

This is a major announcement as it will resume bridging, which will allow users to freely move rsETH between the Ethereum main network and different Layer 2 networks.

The update will provide major relief to users as well as the entire DeFi community after facing turmoil due to a cyberattack. According to the official announcement, rsETH contracts will be unpaused to allow withdrawals of tokens within the next 24 hours. Alphractal’s analysis of Google Trends suggests an unusual cycle in the Bitcoin market. In past bull markets, notably during the 2021 peak, price increases and the volume of searches made by users were closely aligned, and the number of queries for Bitcoin and other terms related to cryptocurrencies increased in tandem with the growth in prices.

The present cycle looks different. Bitcoin has surged as high as around $137,000 before retracing by about 40%, but the search activity for all the tracked terms related to Bitcoin has been relatively flat during the rally as well as the subsequent pullback. The gap between where prices reached and where public curiosity registered is wider than at comparable moments in prior cycles.

The other observation of the data is who was driving price in the most recent price movement. Unlike 2020-2021 where retail activity was clearly evident in search, the appreciation phase for 2024-2025 is also associated with ETF approvals and institutional inflows, which are not necessarily driven by consumer buying patterns.

This division between price movement and search volume could signal that there is still a large wave of retail demand to come into the market. ETH has been ranging since 2023, and building energy at the base of the structure. After a period of building strength, the altcoin has broken above the multi-year resistance, which has created a classic accumulation before a major move.
