Bitcoin’s New Debt Machine is Facing Its First Major Test

Public companies kept stacking Bitcoin in June, but the month’s real story played out in a corner of the market that did not exist a couple of years ago: the preferred shares that treasury firms now use to fund their coin purchases. 

A new report from BitcoinTreasuries.net calls June the first true stress test for this “digital credit” market, and the results offer a mixed but telling verdict on where corporate Bitcoin adoption goes next.

First, the buying. Public treasuries added close to 9,000 BTC before sales in June, or about 7,300 BTC on a net basis, worth some $427 million at the month-end price of $58,398. That counts as moderate growth, and two names did most of the work. 

Michael Saylor’s Strategy added 3,625 BTC net, and Strive added 3,364, with each company spending in the neighborhood of $200 million. 

Strip out those two and the rest of the field bought about 2,000 BTC. For the full second quarter, the report estimates 110,000 BTC in net additions, a pace that beat the two quarters before it.

The context matters here. Bitcoin sat well below its October 2025 peak near $126,000 and dipped under $60,000 during the month. That backdrop set the stage for the drama in digital credit.

Preferred shares to fuel bitcoin
To understand why that drama matters, it helps to know how the model works. Companies such as Strategy no longer rely on their own cash to buy Bitcoin. They issue preferred shares that promise investors a fixed or variable dividend, sell them near a $100 par value, and route the proceeds into coins.

Strategy’s flagship product, STRC, and Strive’s version, SATA, became the two biggest of these instruments. For a stretch, they traded in a tight band around par, and investors treated them as a place to park money at a healthy yield.

A former Meta engineer has publicly identified two structural vulnerabilities he believes could undermine Bitcoin’s long-term viability: the potential threat of quantum computing to the cryptocurrency’s encryption, and the economic challenge posed by declining block rewards for miners. The analysis, shared by TechLeadHD and reported by Wu Blockchain, adds a critical voice to ongoing debates about Bitcoin’s security model and its future as a decentralized financial system.TechLeadHD, who previously worked as a software engineer at Meta, highlighted the advancement of quantum computers as a direct threat to the cryptographic security of Bitcoin wallets. Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve digital signature algorithms (ECDSA) to secure transactions and prove ownership. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically break this encryption, allowing an attacker to derive private keys from public keys and potentially steal funds from active wallets.

While practical quantum computers capable of such attacks are not yet a reality, the timeline for their development remains a subject of intense speculation within both the cryptography and cryptocurrency communities. The concern is not immediate, but the potential for a sudden, disruptive technological leap represents what TechLeadHD calls a ‘time bomb’—a risk that could detonate with little warning once the underlying technology matures.

The second vulnerability identified by the former engineer is more immediate and economic in nature. Bitcoin’s security model depends on a decentralized network of miners who validate transactions and secure the blockchain. These miners are compensated through two mechanisms: newly minted bitcoins (the block reward) and transaction fees paid by users.

The $XRP price chart shows that it has spent months grinding lower, which is frustrating bulls and it is rewarding almost nobody except patient buyers.

On the surface , the $XRP’s trend still looks awfully ugly. But digging into the on-chain data, a more complicated story begins to emerge. As retail participation continues fading, losses are mounting, yet spoke of the largest holders appearing to be moving in the opposite direction. That’s where $XRP gets more interesting.

Right now, there are several onchain metrics pointing toward a prolonged capitulation phase rather than renewed enthusiasm.

The daily transaction volume profit-to-loss ratio surged to 3.802, supported by 22.04 million in realized profit against 5.79 million in realized losses.
At the same time, Network Realized PnL remained deeply negative on July 7, which is suggesting many participants continue exiting positions at a loss.

Another notable signal arrived on July 1, when a sharp Age consumed spike indicated older dormant coins were suddenly moving.

Historically, such activity has often appeared during periods of structural capitulation rather than market euphoria.

Meanwhile, market participation keeps shrinking. Active addresses across the 24-hour, 7-day, and 30-day timeframes have steadily declined since January 2026, while whale transaction counts have also weakened.

That fading engagement coincides with open interest dropping from $1.32 billion to $764.57 million, highlighting a sharp reduction in speculative positioning clearly.
