The recent performance of South Korean stocks is comparable to a rollercoaster ride at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom.

At the end of February, the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran erupted. Global stock markets weathered the first trading day of March 2nd amidst expectations of a swift resolution to the Iranian conflict. However, the South Korean stock market was closed for the entire day due to a holiday.

By the time it reopened on March 3rd, the expectation of a swift resolution to the Middle East situation had completely reversed. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz directly caused chaos in the global oil and gas market, and the KOSPI, which had been a top performer since the beginning of 2026, plummeted into a relentless decline.

On March 3rd, the KOSPI triggered a circuit breaker, ultimately falling by over 7%. It continued to trigger a circuit breaker the following day, closing with a single-day drop of 12.06%, marking its largest single-day decline ever.

On the evening of March 4th, the South Korean Financial Services Commission announced the immediate injection of 100 trillion won (approximately US$68 billion) into the financial market stabilization fund to rescue the market. The KOSPI rebounded sharply by 9.63% the following day.

There are about 20 million Bitcoins in circulation, out of a max of 21 million. That hard cap is a big reason investors see it as digital gold. 

Lately, prices have bounced back a bit, but if one takes a look at BTC's movement in the last two or three months, the asset is down more than 20%. The market’s still trying to find its footing after some big swings.

Many Bitcoin miners are struggling to turn a profit this market cycle due to diminishing returns, so they may need to pivot to artificial intelligence hosting or put their holdings to work to generate yields, says market maker Wintermute.

Wintermute said in a blog post on Thursday that Bitcoin ($BTC) miners have spent years building large-scale power infrastructure in low-cost energy markets, and they now find themselves “sitting on exactly what the AI industry needs most urgently and cannot easily replicate.”

It said that Bitcoin mining is a “structurally rigid business model,” and while the AI pivot is a compelling one, it is also a “drastic and capital-intensive step.”

The report comes as mining giant MARA Holdings is the latest to eye AI, filing with the SEC on March 3 to signal its intent to sell some of its $BTC to pivot to the technology. Meanwhile, publicly listed miners have sold more than 15,000 Bitcoin since October.

Miners hanging onto Bitcoin is “legacy of the HODL era”

Wintermute said that Bitcoin miners are collectively holding close to 1% of the total $BTC supply, which it argued was a “legacy of the HODL era,” and that the “full toolkit of treasury management remains largely untapped.”

Crypto yield generation has been traditionally limited to staking and DeFi, but Wintermute said miners could tap yields through active management, such as monetizing market risk through derivatives structures, covered calls, and cash-secured puts.

Passive management options include deploying $BTC into lending protocols to earn interest.

Coinbase Allegedly Conducted Lobbying Activities Against Bitcoin in the US

The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has allegedly been lobbying against a planned "de minimis" tax exemption for Bitcoin under the controversial crypto tax regulations being debated in the US.

The company allegedly argued to lawmakers that Bitcoin is not widely used as a means of daily payment, and that implementing such an exemption would be "stillborn from the start."

The debate revolves around a de minimis exemption, which aims to eliminate tax liability for small-amount cryptocurrency transactions. Such a regulation could allow users to make everyday payments with cryptocurrency without having to calculate capital gains tax on transactions below a certain amount. However, Coinbase argues that this exemption should only cover regulated, dollar-pegged stablecoins, with USD Coin ($USDC), which is closely associated with the company, being a prominent example.

Coinbase's stablecoin revenue is also at the center of the debate. The company reports that it will generate approximately $1.35 billion in revenue from stablecoin operations in 2025, with a large portion of this coming from interest earned on US Treasury bonds held in $USDC reserves. This revenue stream could grow even further, particularly if legislation like the GENIUS Act, which includes stablecoin regulations in the US, comes into effect. According to Bloomberg, these revenues could potentially increase by up to seven times.
