Circle’s (CRCL) $USDC has overtaken Tether’s $USDT in transaction volumes for the first time since 2019, prompting Japanese investment bank Mizuho to raise its price target for the stablecoin issuer to $120 from $100, while reiterating its neutral rating on the stock.

The shares rose 1% in early trading to $115.40 and are up roughly 95% from their February lows.

Analysts Dan Dolev and Alexander Jenkins increased their Circle estimates, citing "$USDC activity trends and use cases like Polymarket or agentic commerce expectations."

Stablecoins, digital tokens backed by reserves such as fiat currency or gold, serve as key payment and settlement rails in the crypto economy, particularly for trading and cross-border transfers. The sector is dominated by Tether’s $USDT with a $143 billion market cap, followed by Circle’s $USDC at $78 billion.

According to their Friday report, $USDC has recorded about $2.2 trillion in adjusted transaction volume so far in 2026, compared with $1.3 trillion for $USDT. That gives $USDC roughly 64% share of adjusted volumes, a sharp reversal from 2019–2025 when Tether consistently led, and $USDC averaged about a 30% share.

The analysts said the shift matters because the long-term winner among stablecoins will likely be determined by real economic usage rather than market capitalization alone. Standard Chartered expects the stablecoin market cap to reach $2 trillion by the end of 2028.

Reflecting stronger $USDC activity and expanding use cases, the Mizuho analysts raised several long-term Circle forecasts. They now expect “meaningful wallets” to reach 11.7 million by 2027, up from a prior estimate of 10 million, helping lift projected $USDC market capitalization to $139 billion from $123 billion.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Friday that a $500 million donation he made to the Future of Life Institute in 2021 was deployed in ways that diverged from the technical roadmap originally pitched, with the organization later pivoting toward political advocacy that he said carries risks of “authoritarian” outcomes.

On its website, the Future of Life Institute describes its mission as "steering transformative technology towards benefiting life and away from extreme large-scale risks." The organization lists artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nuclear weapons as its primary focus areas.

The funds came from Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens Buterin received from the project that year, which he said he later split between the Future of Life Institute and the CryptoRelief fund, according to a post on X. It started inside the traditional banking system.

A new class action lawsuit claims JPMorgan Chase helped enable a massive Ponzi scheme run by Goliath Ventures.

According to the complaint, the scheme raised about $328 million from roughly 2,000 investors between 2023 and early 2026.

Investors were promised steady monthly returns from crypto trading strategies and liquidity pools.

But prosecutors say the business operated like a classic Ponzi structure, where new investor money was used to pay earlier investors while the rest was diverted elsewhere.

Investigators say over $250 million flowed through a JPMorgan business bank account controlled by the company.

From there, large transfers were sent to wallets and accounts on Coinbase and other crypto platforms.

According to prosecutors, only a small portion of the funds was actually used for crypto trading.

The rest was allegedly spent on luxury homes, travel, events, and payments used to keep the scheme running.

The fraud began collapsing when investors started asking for withdrawals and payments slowed down.

Authorities later froze assets and placed the company into receivership while investigators traced where the money went.

But here is the part nobody likes to talk about.

When a scam touches crypto, the entire industry gets blamed.

Yet the money in this case allegedly moved through the traditional banking system first.

Hundreds of millions of dollars reportedly flowed through regulated bank accounts before reaching crypto wallets.

Banks constantly claim they have the most advanced fraud detection and compliance systems in the world.
