Bitcoin should prepare now, even if quantum is a 'lab experiment’: Adam Back

Blockstream CEO Adam Back, an early pioneer of the crypto movement, said Bitcoiners should be looking at building quantum-resistant solutions now, even if the threat is still decades away.

“Quantum computing still has a lot to prove. Current systems are essentially lab experiments. I’ve followed the field for over 25 years, and progress has been incremental,” Back said at Paris Blockchain Week on Tuesday.

“That said, Bitcoin should prepare,” Back said, adding that the “safest approach” is to build optional upgrades that allow migration to quantum-resistant cryptography if needed.

Concerns that quantum computers could eventually break blockchain cryptography have fueled industry-wide fear that bad actors could use it to break into crypto wallets, plunging the market into chaos.

Back said in November that the quantum threat is still 20 to 40 years away, while explaining to Bloomberg earlier this month that today’s quantum computers are slower than calculators.

Despite this, his Bitcoin development company, Blockstream, has a dedicated quantum team researching potential threat vectors to the Bitcoin network.

Part of that work has involved implementing hash-based signatures on Blockstream’s Bitcoin layer-2 Liquid Network, Back said at Paris Blockchain Week.

“Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis.”

He added that the Taproot protocol could also support alternative signature schemes on the Bitcoin network without affecting current users.

Last month, Google and California Institute of Technology researchers said functional quantum computers could come sooner than expected and that far less computing power is needed to break cryptography than previously thought.

This daily BTCUSD chart shows Bitcoin pushing above a long descending trendline that had capped price since late 2025. SuperBro says the breakout looks decisive because it comes with stronger volume, and he notes that in 2022 a similar break did not arrive until October.

The chart supports that view. Bitcoin spent months trading under a clear linear downtrend, with lower highs forming along the white resistance line. Now price has moved through that trendline near the $72,000 to $74,000 area. At the same time, volume has increased, which gives the breakout more weight than a quiet move above resistance.

That matters because trendline breaks on rising volume often signal a shift in market control. Sellers had defended this slope for months, but the latest candles show buyers pushing through it. Even so, one breakout candle does not guarantee a full trend reversal. Traders usually wait to see whether price can hold above the broken line and build continuation.

The 2022 comparison adds context. Back then, Bitcoin stayed under its broader downtrend for much longer before finally breaking out later in the year. Here, the suggestion is that $BTC may be showing relative strength earlier in the cycle. If price holds above the trendline, the breakout could mark the start of a broader recovery phase. If it falls back below, the move may turn into a false breakout instead.

Ethereum MACD Has Just Seen A Potential Golden Cross

In a new post on X, analyst Ali Martinez has shared a technical analysis (TA) signal forming in the 1-week price of Ethereum. The signal in question is related to the Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD), a technical indicator that’s generally used for identifying buying and selling points for an asset.

It involves two trendlines. The first, called the MACD line, tracks the difference between the 12-period and 26-period exponential moving averages (MAs) for the asset’s price. Meanwhile, the other level, known as the signal line, is the 9-period EMA of the MACD line.

Interactions between the two trendlines of the MACD indicator may provide hints about where the asset could be headed next; a surge from the MACD line above the signal line can be a sign that a bullish market shift may be occurring. On the other hand, the reverse crossover can be a bearish signal.

Now, here is the chart shared by Martinez that shows the trend in the MACD for the weekly price of Ethereum over the last couple of years:

In the graph, the histogram tracks the distance between the indicator’s trendlines. Earlier, this histogram was in the negative territory, indicating that the Ethereum MACD line was trading under the signal line. Recently, however, the metric has just turned into the positive zone, implying a bullish crossover may be forming.

The form-filling burden is enough to deter users from using the largest cryptocurrency to pay for real-world transactions, according to the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank known for its support of free markets, limited government and individual liberty. Abolishing capital gains tax could change that, it said.

"It’s never been easier to use Bitcoin as money," Nicholas Anthony, a research fellow at the institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, wrote in a report. "Yet, at the same time, the tax code puts an incredible burden on law-abiding citizens. Something as simple as buying a cup of coffee every day with Bitcoin can result in over 100 pages of tax filings."

That's because the tax system doesn't treat bitcoin as cash at the point of payment. Instead, every transaction is treated as if an asset has been sold just at that moment, triggering capital gains calculations. And the calculations aren't straightforward.

That means figuring out when the bitcoin (or fraction of bitcoin) used in the transaction was originally acquired, how much it cost and the value at the moment it was spent. The difference is then treated as a taxable capital gain or loss.

Then it gets complicated. It's quite possible the BTC was accumulated in several batches rather than a single purchase. So when you paid for the coffee, the coins could have been acquired at different times, each with its own cost basis and purchase price. Those details need to be retrieved, recorded and reported. Every time.

The headache doesn't stop there, because there is always a risk of penalty or audit in case you make a mistake in reporting.
