Taproot creators didn’t foresee its ‘trolling value’ — Bitcoin dev

Bitcoin Core developer Jimmy Song said the Taproot upgrade hasn’t lived up to the hype, claiming it has failed to deliver on promised privacy and security features.


Bitcoin developers behind the Taproot upgrade didn’t account for the “social attack surface” that enabled Ordinals, BRC-20s, and other nonfinancial transactions to flood the network with spam, says a Bitcoin developer. 

“What they ignore is that Taproot had significant trolling value as the upgrade that Bitcoiners were placing their hopes in,” Bitcoin Core developer Jimmy Song said in an X video on Sunday, adding:

“The increase in the social attack surface of this upgrade wasn’t accounted for at all, let alone considered.”

Song — who referred to Ordinals as a “fiat scam” last year — claimed that Taproot has failed to live up to the hype because it didn’t deliver on the privacy and security features promised. 

He pointed to Schnorr signatures and Script Paths Spend features, which, together, were touted as a more efficient alternative to multisig, in some cases allowing three of five friends or family members to assist with recovering a Bitcoin key. However, it ended up being even more complicated as it required more rounds of signatures than traditional multisig, he said.

IRS unveils Form 1099-DA for 2025 crypto taxes
As the US tax filing season kicks in, Coinbase is reminding crypto holders that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched Form 1099-DA, the new framework for disclosing digital asset transactions in the United States.

The IRS’s Form 1099-DA is the standard document for reporting proceeds from cryptocurrency and non-fungible token transactions beginning in 2025. This is the first year the tax revenue agency has implemented a unified structure for crypto transaction reporting.

The draft was published in April 2024, as suggested by the notes from Coinbase. It would lay the ground for the coming shift in reporting. Crypto holders need the form to report gross proceeds from broker-sponsored digital transactions completed after January 1, 2025.

Taxpayers can expect to start receiving copies of this notice this week along with W-2 forms for other tax reports. This report has to be filed by April 15, 2026.

IRS document adds new tax reporting requirements for digital assets

Before the new agency document was created, US taxpayers were solely responsible for reporting income or capital gains from digital asset transactions. Although that obligation remains unchanged, reporting methods will now follow a consistent format across all trading platforms within America’s jurisdiction.

US customers who sold or exchanged cryptocurrency on any platform are expected to receive a Form 1099-DA from the exchanges. Broker platforms operating in the US must also document transaction proceeds in a format required by the IRS specifi

Revenue climbs 27%, but crypto slows
Robinhood delivered record Q4 net revenue of $1.28 billion, up 27% YOY. However, the figure fell short of Wall Street’s $1.34 billion expectations. Crypto revenue was a weak spot, dropping by 38% from a year earlier to $221 million.

Quarterly net income declined 34% to $605 million, though earnings per share came in at 66 cents. That was slightly above the 63 cent forecast.

For the full year, Robinhood posted record net revenue of $4.5 billion in 2025 – A 52% increase from 2024. Annual net income rose 35% to $1.9 billion. Crypto volumes rose 3% quarter-on-quarter to $82.4 billion, while equity volumes jumped 10% to $710 billion. Options contracts went up 8% to 659 million as well.

Meanwhile, revenue from prediction markets and futures was up 375% year-on-year to $147 million. They surpassed equity-trading revenue for the first time.

With revenues lower than forecasted, HOOD slipped on the price charts in response.

The bigger picture
The crypto community is now arguing that Robinhood’s story is much bigger than Bitcoin’s [BTC] price swings. Many investors say that the link to BTC is overstated, given crypto now makes up a smaller share of total revenue.

Instead, the focus is on new products, international expansion, prediction markets, banking services, credit cards and tax tools. Investors are also watching net interest income (supported by margin lending and securities lending) closely.

In fact, some believe Robinhood is approaching a potential $5 billion revenue run rate. With an average price target near $145, the recent sell-off can be branded an overreaction.
