Morgan Stanley has tapped Coinbase and BNY Mellon to serve key custody and administrative roles for its proposed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to an amended registration statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing for the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust outlines a structure in which Coinbase Custody Trust Company and BNY will act as bitcoin custodians, responsible for safeguarding the fund's digital assets and facilitating transfers tied to share creations and redemptions.

BNY will also serve as administrator, transfer agent and cash custodian, overseeing accounting, shareholder records and cash management for the trust.

Bitcoin trades 20% below miner costs as fear builds, but is a bullish rotation starting?

Bitcoin looks stressed, but quiet accumulation may already be underway.
Recent on-chain conditions indicate that Bitcoin [BTC] has entered a period of structural market stress. Several cycle indicators are now compressing simultaneously as post-peak fragility continues to ripple through the ecosystem.

Within this environment, Entity-Adjusted NUPL has declined towards roughly 0.2, pushing sentiment into the historical fear zone. Previously in the cycle, the metric hovered near 0.6 while Bitcoin traded close to $110,000.

Since then, however, persistent selling pressure has compressed unrealized profits across the network.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at around $68,000–$69,000. At the same time, the price was sitting roughly 20–25% below the estimated average miner production cost

of $89,000–$91,000. Needless to say, this leaves a significant portion of the network operating underwater.

As margins tighten, many miners are liquidating reserves to maintain cash flow, while some firms increasingly explore AI data center infrastructure to diversify revenue. This may help them offset losses from mining operations.

Meanwhile, mining conditions have been mirroring this pressure. Network hashrate has fluctuated between 980 and 1,150 EH/s as operators optimize fleets following February’s margin compression and difficulty adjustments. In parallel, hashprice has been suppressed near $30–$32 per PH/s/day, leaving profitability for all but the most efficient miners near breakeven and reinforcing the market’s ongoing stress phase.

Why Bitcoin keeps snapping back to $70k — and the $13B options "magnet" behind it

Bitcoin’s rebound on March 4 looked odd if you only watched it through the usual “risk assets are breaking” lens. Oil was jumping, shipping insurers were repricing war risk, and traders were treating the Strait of Hormuz like a live wire. All of the headlines had the cadence of a full-blown crisis.

However, Bitcoin climbed back into the same $70,000 zone it has been orbiting for weeks, despite seeing a notable drop the weekend before.

Two factors explain that move.

The first is a pretty straightforward macro influence. Whenever the Middle East starts seeing oil shocks, markets quickly price in higher energy costs, messier supply chains, and a whole other range of negative outcomes. Joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory attacks across the Gulf caused disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and led to a severe energy shock.

As threats around the Strait intensified, war risk insurance and freight rates spiked, leading to a quick surge in oil and gas prices.

The second factor is derivatives. While it's not the only cause of the recovery, it explains why $BTC can drop on shock and then rebound into a familiar price band even while the market remains nervous. The biggest effect comes from options, where hedging flows can pull the price toward crowded strike zones.

The macro shock supplied the match, but the options market supplied the dry timber already stacked around $70,000.
